Brand Hills Formation
The Brand Hills Formation is a geologic formation in Leicestershire, and lies within the wider Swithland Wood and The Brand area. It preserves an ichnotaxon dating back to the Cambrian period. Paleobiota Whilst there isn't alot within the Brand Hills Formation, it does mark the appearance of ichnogenera, which are usually attributed to burrowing organisms like marine annelids. In the case of this formation, only '' Arenicolites'' is known. A geological formation, or simply formation, is a body of rock having a consistent set of physical characteristics ( lithology) that distinguishes it from adjacent bodies of rock, and which occupies a particular position in the layers of rock exposed in a geographical region (the stratigraphic column). It is the fundamental unit of lithostratigraphy, the study of strata or rock layers. A formation must be large enough that it can be mapped at the surface or traced in the subsurface. The Swithland Formation is a Formation (geology), geologic formation in Leicestershire, and lies within the wider Swithland Wood and The Brand area. It preserves ichnotaxon dating back to the Cambrian Period (geology), period. Paleobiota The Swithland Formation preserves a lot of Cambrian ichnogenera, which are usually attributed to burrowing organisms like marine annelids. The most important one from this formation is Teichichnus, which was the first one found, and the one that proved this Brand Group was Cambrian in age, which also led to the discovery and research of a diorite unconformity between the Brand Group, Brand and Maplewell Groups. Hanging Rocks Formation
The Hanging Rocks Formation is a geologic formation in Leicestershire, and is the youngest and smallest of the Maplewell Group and the larger Charnian Supergroup which it is a part of. Due to this, and the fact that the rocks are not well exposed at both the top and base, there have been no Ediacaran fossils found to date, unlike the two underlying Bradgate and Beacon Hill Formations. Dating Despite the poor exposure of the formation, scientists were able to collect zircon crystals from the lower parts of the formation, allowing them to perform zircon U-Pb dating, which recovered a date of , close to the Bradgate Formations top age of 557 Ma. The Brand Group is a geologic group in Leicestershire. It preserves Ichnotaxon dating back to the Cambrian period. It mainly contains pelites, with greywacke and breccia. Formation units It is made up of two formations. Uppermost within the group is the Swithland Formation, consisting of purple pelites and fine greywackes, with thin discontinuous shale-pebble conglomerates at its base. This is underlain by the Brand Hills Formation, which consists of quartzarenite interbedded with pelite, greywackes and berrica.
