Braakberg
The Braakberg is a 645.5 metre high mountain in the Harz in central Germany, in the unincorporated area of Harz in the district of Göttingen in the state of Lower Saxony. Geography Location The Braakberg lies in the South Harz within the Harz National Park about 2.4 km north of Lonau. To the north it transitions into the ridge known as Auf dem Acker. Lonau
Lonau is a small village with a population of about 345 situated at an elevation of about 400m in the Harz Mountains of Northern Germany. Besides the clean air and lush forests, it is famous for the capercaillie. It belongs to the city of Herzberg am Harz which is about 4 km to the south. The rivers Große Lonau and Kleine Lonau join here. Franzosenkopf (Harz)
The Franzosenkopf is a 562 metre high hill in the Harz Mountains of central Germany, which lies about 1.4 kilometres northeast of Lonau in the district of Göttingen in Lower Saxony. To the north of the Franzosenkopf is the Braakberg, a shallow saddle separating them. Flowing around the Franzosenkopf to the east and south is the Kleine Lonau in the valley of ''Mariental'' ("Mary's Valley"). To the west the Franzosenkopf is separated from the Kargeskopf hill by the ''Hackenstieltal'' valley. The Franzosenkopf is mostly covered in beech, but spruce also occurs in places. Auf Dem Acker
Auf dem Acker (commonly called the ''Acker'') is a mountain ridge up to 865.1 metres high, which is located in the southwestern part of the Harz mountains in Lower Saxony ( Germany). Geography The ridge begins south of the Bruchberg near ''Stieglitzecke'' (on the B 242) and runs from there for about towards the southwest. For the first its crest is continuously higher than 800 metres. Its southwestern foothills transition to the Harz Foreland at Osterode am Harz. Together with the Bruchberg, the Acker forms the ''Acker-Bruchberg Massif''. Northwest of the ridge lies the valley of the River Söse and the Söse Reservoir, as well as the villages of Riefensbeek and Kamschlacken. South of the ridge lie the villages of Lonau and Sieber. The Hanskühnenburg lies roughly in the middle of the ridge at a height of 811 metres. Große Steinau
The Große Steinau is a river of Lower Saxony, Germany. It is a tributary of the Sieber, north of Herzberg am Harz in the district of Göttingen. It rises at about 690 metres near the crags of the Sophienklippe on the Acker. It initially flows in a southwesterly direction, but later swings south before discharging into the Sieber near the small settlement of ''Aschenhütte'', not far from the mouth of the Kleine Steinau. In times of drought the water of the Große Steinau seeps completely into the karst ground before its mouth and reappears about 4 days later at the Rhume Spring. An abandoned village, Steynowe, was probably located in the lower valley of the Große Steinau, but its exact location has not been found. A mountain is an elevated portion of the Earth's crust, generally with steep sides that show significant exposed bedrock. Großer Mittelberg (Lonau)
The Großer Mittelberg (the short form ''Mittelberg'' is also common) is a ridge in the Harz Mountains of Germany that begins immediately northeast of Lonau in the district of Göttingen in Lower Saxony. It separates the valley of ''Kirchtal'', through which the Große Lonau flows, from the ''Mariental'' and the Kleine Lonau. is Although it is the nearest subpeak to the village of Lonau, the Großer Mittelberg is, at 531 metres, not the highest point, but may be viewed as a main summit due to its prominent location. From here on, the ridge only climbs gently in a northeasterly direction and has several more subpeaks with small wind gaps. Harz National Park
Harz National Park is a nature reserve in the German federal states of Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt. It comprises portions of the western Harz mountain range, extending from Herzberg and Bad Lauterberg at the southern edge to Bad Harzburg and Ilsenburg on the northern slopes. 95% of the area is covered with forests, mainly with spruce and beech woods, including several bogs, granite rocks and creeks. The park is part of the Natura 2000 network of the European Union. In its current form, the park was created on January 1, 2006, by the merger of the Harz National Park in Lower Saxony, established in 1994, and the Upper Harz National Park in Saxony-Anhalt, established in 1990.
