Boßler Tunnel
The Boßler Tunnel is a railway tunnel currently under construction as part of the new Wendlingen–Ulm high-speed railway. The tunnel is approximately long, built as two parallel single-track tunnels. The tunnel runs between Aichelberg and Mühlhausen im Täle under the ''Roter Wasen'' and the Boßler mountain. It is one of a series of tunnels underneath the Swabian Jura range. When completed, it will be the longest tunnel on the line and the fifth longest tunnel in Germany (after the Landrücken Tunnel, the Münden Tunnel, the Filder Tunnel and the Katzenberg Tunnel). Wendlingen–Ulm High-speed Railway
Wendlingen-Ulm high-speed line is a high-speed railway in Germany, entirely within the state of Baden-Württemberg. The line crosses the Swabian Jura mountain range, with trains traveling at speeds up to 250 km/h. It mostly follows the A8 motorway, connecting with the Neu-Ulm station in the east and Stuttgart in the west. Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof is currently being redeveloped as part of the Stuttgart 21 project. As a section of the Stuttgart–Augsburg new and upgraded line, the Wendlingen-Ulm line is a component of the Magistrale for Europe from Paris to Budapest, which is supported by the European Union as part of its Trans-European Networks. The European Union provided up to 50 per cent funding of the planning phase of the project and ten per cent of its construction costs. Overburden
In mining, overburden (also called waste or spoil) is the material that lies above an area that lends itself to economical exploitation, such as the rock, soil, and ecosystem that lies above a coal seam or ore body. Overburden is distinct from tailings, the material that remains after economically valuable components have been extracted from the generally finely milled ore. Overburden is removed during surface mining, but is typically not contaminated with toxic components. Overburden may also be used to restore an exhausted mining site during reclamation. ''Stuttgarter Nachrichten'' (''Stuttgart News'') is a newspaper that is published in Stuttgart-Möhringen, Germany. It sells together with the '' Stuttgarter Zeitung'', which comes from the same publishing house. Tunnel Boring Machine
A tunnel boring machine (TBM), also known as a "mole", is a machine used to excavate tunnels with a circular cross section through a variety of soil and rock strata. They may also be used for microtunneling. They can be designed to bore through hard rock, wet or dry soil, or sand. Tunnel diameters can range from (micro-TBMs) to to date. Tunnels of less than a metre or so in diameter are typically done using trenchless construction methods or horizontal directional drilling rather than TBMs. TBMs can be designed to excavate non-circular tunnels, including u-shaped, horseshoe, square or rectangular tunnels. Tunnel boring machines are used as an alternative to drilling and blasting (D&B) methods in rock and conventional "hand mining" in soil. Westerheim, Baden-Württemberg
Location Westerheim is a municipality in the district of Alb-Donau in Baden-Württemberg in Germany. It is located at a height of 800 meters on the Swabian Jura, about 30 Kilometers north-west of Ulm. History Its origins stretch back to the Middle Ages. The Dukes of Helfenstein introduced the Reformation between 1555 and 1567, but Westerheim reverted to Catholicism. Today its inhabitants are mainly Roman Catholic, though the surrounding villages are Evangelical. In 1911-12 Westerheim received electricity. It was badly damaged in April 1945, when German Army units made a stand there.
