"Bowie" is the sixth episode of the HBO comedy series ''Flight of the Conchords''. The episode first aired in the United States on Sunday, 22 July 2007. After a photo session, Bret develops body image issues and gets some dream advice from his idol, David Bowie. Jemaine plots to cheer him up and Murray tries to get one of the band's tunes used for a musical greeting card. Plot Bret starts suffering body image issues after Murray accuses him of being small during a photo session. He then gets visited in a dream by a Ziggy Stardust-era David Bowie (performed by Jemaine, whose resemblance is acknowledged by Bret) telling him not to worry about his body image and advising him to get an eyepatch. ''Bowi'' was the first EP released on Stiff Records. Recorded by Nick Lowe, who had also released the first Stiff single, the title and cover were intended as a humorous response to the David Bowie album ''Low'', which had been released earlier in the year. Lowe decided that as Bowie had made an album with his name, but without the final ''e'', he would reciprocate by making a record with Bowie's name, also lacking the final ''e''. Of the four tracks on the EP, only "Marie Provost" was initially re-released on an album, 1978's ''Jesus of Cool'' (issued as ''Pure Pop for Now People'' in the US), although all four tracks appear on the 2008 deluxe re-release edition of ''Jesus of Cool''. Boøwy ( ; stylized as BOØWY) was a Japanese rock band formed in Takasaki, Gunma in 1981. The classic lineup of vocalist Kyosuke Himuro, guitarist Tomoyasu Hotei, bassist Tsunematsu Matsui, and drummer Makoto Takahashi reached legendary status in Japan during the 1980s. In 1988, the year they broke up, they became the first male artists to have three number-one albums within a single year on the Oricon chart. They were named Artist of the Year at the 3rd annual Japan Gold Disc Awards in 1989. The 1990s Band Boom in Japan was credited to Boøwy as they popularized the formation of musical groups. Bowie Race Track
The Bowie Race Track was a horse racing track located just outside the city limits of Bowie, Maryland. The one mile oval racetrack, known as Prince George's Park, was opened October 1, 1914 under the auspices of the Southern Maryland Agricultural Society—in actuality the track's owners were famous Baltimore confidence men Gad Brian and Jim O'Hara. A major attraction in the area, easy access for racetrack patrons was available from the WB&A Railroad which ran trains every five minutes from the Liberty Street Station in Baltimore for which they charged 65¢ for a round-trip ticket. Admission to the grounds and grandstand was $1.00. The track was a natural addition to the area, home to the Belair Stud Farm, founded by Samuel Ogle and credited as the "Cradle of American thoroughbred racing." The Bowie Handicap at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland was a Thoroughbred horse race run between 1909 and 1938. A race on dirt, this once much anticipated event that drew some of the very best horses in the country was contested at distances from a mile and one-quarter to as much as two miles. Historical notes The inaugural running on November 9, 1909 offered a purse of $2,000 added and was won by that year's American Horse of the Year Fitz Herbert whose winning time broke the world record time for two miles on dirt. The 1918 edition of the Bowie Handicap, set at a distance of a mile and one-half, saw something that remains a real rarity even to this day in American Thoroughbred racing when three Kentucky Derby winners finished 1-2-3. USS ''PCS-1405'' was a United States Navy minesweeper in commission from 1944 to 1946. She saw service in the latter stages of World War II. After her Navy service, she was transferred to the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey, where she saw service as the coastal survey ship USC&GS ''Bowie'' (CSS 27) from 1946 to 1967. Construction and commissioning The ship was laid down as ''PC-1405'' on 1 May 1943 by the Greenport Basin and Construction Company in Greenport, New York.
