Borsele (municipality)
Borsele (; zea, label=Zeelandic, Bossele) is a municipality in the southwestern Netherlands on Zuid-Beveland. The name of the municipality is spelled with a single s; the name of the eponymous village is Borssele, spelled with double s. The municipality is mainly known for the Borssele Nuclear Power Station and the Central Storage for Radioactive Waste. As of 24 March 2022, there are 344 municipalities ( nl, gemeenten) and three special municipalities () in the Netherlands. The latter is the status of three of the six island territories that make up the Dutch Caribbean. Borssele Nuclear Power Station
The Borssele Nuclear Power Station (''Kerncentrale Borssele'') is a nuclear power plant near the Dutch town of Borssele. It has a pressurised water reactor (PWR). Borssele is the only nuclear power plant still operational for electricity production in the Netherlands. Its net output is 485 MWe. History The Borssele nuclear power plant was built by Siemens and has been operational since 1973. Originally it was built primarily to supply relatively cheap electricity to an aluminum smelting facility, opened by French concern Pechiney at a nearby site in 1971, that for many years used two-thirds of the output of the power plant. In 2006, the installation of a modern steam turbine brought the original electrical output of 449 MW up to 485 MW. Nisse, Netherlands
Nisse is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Borsele, and lies about 17 km east of Middelburg. Nisse was a separate municipality until 1970, when it was merged with Borsele. Nisse is one of seventeen protected city- and village views in Zeeland. There is a 15th-century church with 14th century tower, containing frescoes and wood carvings. The village square, restored in 1975, has a bandstand, an 18th-century water pump and a ''vaete'' - a waterhole formerly used by cattle, now commonly in use as a duck pond. Nisse's surrounding countryside consists of meadows with hawthorn hedges and ''welen'' - a type of open water - and is loved by both hikers and cyclists. Nieuwdorp
Nieuwdorp is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Borsele, and lies about 9 km east of Middelburg. History The village was first mentioned around 1750 as Het Nieuwe Dorp, and means "new village". Nieuw (new) has been added to distinguish from 's-Heer Arendskerke which was colloquially called Oudedorp. Nieuwdorp is a dike village which appeared after the West-Kraayertpolder was ''poldered'' in 1642 and Nieuwe Kraayertpolder was added in 1675. The village is centred around a large square. The Reformed Church was built first in 1841 and is an aisleless church in neoclassic style. It was converted into an apartment building in 2003. The Dutch Reformed church was built between 1917 and 1918 and has expressionist elements. The tower contains a bell from 1710. Nieuwdorp was home to 388 people in 1840. Lewedorp
Lewedorp is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Borsele, and lies about 9 km east of Middelburg. The village was first mentioned in 1913 as Noordkraaijert. It was renamed on 13 August 1929 and refers to Unico Evert Lewe van Neijenstein, the mayor of 's-Heer Arendskerke between 1892 until 1933. The village used to be located near the ferry to Zuid-Beveland and Walcheren which operated from 1755 until 1872. The Catholic St Eligius Church was built in 1929 and designed by .
