Boekman Foundation
The Boekman Foundation Institute for arts, culture and related policy (Dutch: Boekmanstichting Kenniscentrum voor kunst, cultuur en beleid) is a research institute for Dutch arts and culture policy and practice. It was named after the Amsterdam SDAP politician and alderman Emanuel Boekman (1889–1940), who promoted public support for art and culture in his PhD thesis of 1939. The Boekman Foundation was established in 1963 by Dutch cultural philosopher Jan Kassies ( nl) and compiles and analyses statistical and other data on art and culture in the Netherlands for policy purposes. Its main periodical publications are the quarterly ''Boekman'' cultural magazine since 2003 and the annual national review report ''Culture Monitor'' (Cultuurmonitor) with an online dashboard resource. The Foundation hosts a free expertise database and library ''Kennisbank'' on art, culture and related policy with 85,000 titles in 2024. Emanuel Boekman
Emanuel ("Manus") Boekman (15 August 1889 – 15 May 1940) was a Dutch social democratic politician, statistician, demographer and typographer. He is remembered for his activities as a municipal executive board member for education and culture (''wethouder'') in Amsterdam (1931-1933, 1935-1940) and his advocacy for an active state cultural policy. Life Boekman was born into a Jewish bookseller dynasty and was the eldest son of Maurits Boekman (1869-1942), initially a diamond cutter, and Heintje Peereboom. At the age of twelve, he started working as a typographer. He was interested in politics and became a chairman of his trade union, the Typografen Jongelingen Vereeniging (Young Typographer's Society). Walter Benjamin
Walter Bendix Schönflies Benjamin (; ; 15 July 1892 – 26 September 1940) was a German Jewish philosopher, cultural critic and essayist. An eclectic thinker, combining elements of German idealism, Romanticism, Western Marxism, and Jewish mysticism, Benjamin made enduring and influential contributions to aesthetic theory, literary criticism, and historical materialism. Cinephilia
Cinephilia (; also cinemaphilia or filmophilia) is the term used to refer to a passionate interest in films, film theory, and film criticism. The term is a portmanteau of the words cinema and philia, one of the four ancient Greek words for love. A person with a passionate interest in cinema is called a cinephile (), cinemaphile, filmophile, or, informally, a film buff (also movie buff). To a cinephile, a movie is not just a form of entertainment as they see films from a more critical point of view. COVID-19 Pandemic In The Netherlands
The COVID-19 pandemic in the Netherlands has resulted in confirmed cases of COVID-19 and deaths. The virus reached the Netherlands on 27 February 2020, when its first COVID-19 case was confirmed in Tilburg. It involved a 56-year-old Dutchman who had arrived in the Netherlands from Italy, where the COVID-19 pandemic seemed to enter Europe. As of 31 January 2021, there are 978,475 confirmed cases of infections and 13,998 confirmed deaths. The first death occurred on 6 March, when an 86-year-old patient died in Rotterdam.
