The Black Caviar Lightning, registered as the Lightning Stakes, is a Victoria Racing Club Group One, Group 1 thoroughbred horse race at Weight for Age, run over a distance of 1000 metres at Flemington Racecourse, Melbourne, Australia in February. Prize money is A$1,000,000. History The Lightning Stakes forms the first leg of the three leg Autumn sprint series over the Melbourne carnival. Flemington Racecourse
Flemington Racecourse is a major horse racing venue located in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is most notable for hosting the Melbourne Cup, which is the world's richest handicap and the world's richest 3200-metre horse race. Caviar or caviare is a food consisting of salt-cured roe of the family Acipenseridae. Caviar is considered a delicacy and is eaten as a garnish or spread. Traditionally, the term caviar refers only to roe from wild sturgeon in the Caspian Sea and Black Sea (beluga, ossetra and sevruga caviars). Chautauqua (foaled 20 September 2010) is a former and now retired champion Australian thoroughbred racehorse. Chautauqua's grey colouring saw him receive the nickname “The Grey Flash”. Chautauqua raced 32 times, winning 6 group one races and earning AU$8,821,935 in prize money. This includes three successive Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes wins and a Group 1 Chairman's Sprint Prize (Hong Kong) win. Chautauqua was co-trained by trainers Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes under their business, Hawkes Racing. The responsibility of the horse relies largely on the trainer. Background At the 2014 Inglis Classic yearling sale, In Her Time had a reserve price of A$ 40,000, however this was not met. Racing career In Her Time initially started her racing career under Newcastle trainer Ben Smith. In 2017 the mare was ridden by Zac Purton to win the Group 1 Galaxy at Royal Randwick Racecourse. Gytrash (foaled 28 August 2015) is a retired Australian Group 1 Thoroughbred racehorse, who was trained by Gordon Richards at Morphettville in South Australia. He is named after the legendary spirit of English folklore, the Gytrash that is said to take form of a horse, mule or dog. Background Gytrash was bred by Packaging Investments Australia, Haltrow and Glastonbury Farms. He was first offered for sale as a weanling at the Great Southern Sale in 2016, where he was sold for $70,000. Background Home Affairs was born and bred in Torryburn, New South Wales at the boutique Torryburn Stud. Takeover Target (27 September 1999 – 20 June 2015) was a much-travelled Australian Thoroughbred racehorse who won top sprinting races in each of the five major cities in Australia as well as in the United Kingdom, Japan, and Singapore.
