Bill Edwards (English Footballer)
William H. Edwards (1874 – after 1896) was an English professional footballer who played in the Football League for Small Heath. Edwards was born in Coventry, Warwickshire. An outside left, he played football for Singer's before joining Small Heath in September 1896 as a replacement for Tommy Hands, who had walked out of the club after six seasons as first choice on the left wing. Edwards made his debut in the Second Division on the opening day of the 1896–97 season in a 3–1 win at home to Newcastle United, and played four of the next six games, scoring once, before losing his place and not regaining it.Matthews, p. 144. Harry Edwards (English Footballer)
Henry Ross Edwards (1870 – after 1899) was an English professional footballer who played in the Football League for Small Heath. Edwards was born in Coventry, Warwickshire. An inside forward, he attracted the attention of the Small Heath club, whose scout went to watch him playing for Singer's; they signed him, together with his more impressive teammate Frank Mobley, who went on to score 64 goals in four seasons for Small Heath. Edwards played in the first five games of the 1892–93 season – Small Heath's first season in the Football League – and scored on his debut, in a 5–1 defeat of Port Vale,Matthews, p. 141. but could not compete with Billy Walton and the prolific Fred Wheldon. The 1896–97 season was the 26th season of competitive football in England. Overview Aston Villa became the second team (after Preston North End) to complete " the Double" of winning the Football League Championship and the FA Cup. No other team would complete the double for 64 years. The Cup Final was played on 10 April 1897 between Aston Villa and Everton. At the start of the day, the top of the league table looked thus:This table was extrapolated from the final table, after excluding the results from 10 April onwards. Consequently, with a total of 30 league games to play in the season, only Derby County had any "mathematical" possibility of overtaking Aston Villa to take the title. The Football League Second Division was the second level division in the English football league system between 1892 and 1992. Following the foundation of the FA Premier League, the Football League divisions were renumbered and the third tier became known as the Football League Second Division.
