Beyond Reasonable Doubt (TV Series)
''Beyond Reasonable Doubt'' was an Australian documentary series broadcast by the ABC in 1977. Presented by criminologist Professor Gordon Hawkins, it had 4 episodes revisiting four different criminal cases. The cases involving Ronald Ryan, Alexander McLeod-Lindsay Leith Ratten, and Frits Van Beelen had their evidence re-examined and it was questioned whether the cases were proven beyond reasonable doubt. It was created by Geoff Daniels and produced by ABC's feature group. Gordon Hawkins (criminologist)
Gordon Joseph Hawkins (1919 in London, England – February 29, 2004 in Manly, New South Wales, Australia) was an Australian criminologist. He served as a professor at the University of Sydney's Institute of Criminology from 1961 to 1984, and was the Institute's director from 1981 to 1985. After retiring in 1984, he served as a senior fellow at the University of California, Berkeley's Earl Warren Legal Institute until 2001. From 1970 to 1999, he published twelve books, nine of them co-authored with Berkeley professor Franklin Zimring. His first book, ''The Honest Politician's Guide to Crime Control'', was co-authored by Norval Morris and published by the University of Chicago Press in 1970. Ronald Ryan
Ronald Joseph Ryan (21 February 1925 – 3 February 1967) was the last person to be legally executed in Australia. Ryan was found guilty of shooting and killing warder George Hodson during an escape from Pentridge Prison, Victoria, in 1965. Ryan's hanging was met with public protests by those opposed to capital punishment. Capital punishment was abolished in all states by 1985. Early life Ronald Edmond Thompson was born at the Royal Women's Hospital in Melbourne's inner suburb of Carlton, to John Ronald Ryan and Cecilia Thompson (née Young). Cecilia already had a son with her first husband, George Harry Thompson and was living with John Ryan. Cecilia and George had separated in 1915 when George left to fight in the Great War. Alexander McLeod-Lindsay
Alexander McLeod-Lindsay (24 December 1934 – 17 September 2009) was a Scots-born Australian who is noted for having served nine years in jail for attempting to murder his wife, but who was later exonerated. Early life McLeod-Lindsay's father, William McLeod-Lindsay, was a hotel waiter. His mother, Jessie Colligan, was a hotel housemaid. They were not married and McLeod-Lindsay was raised by his blind grandparents with the help of his aunts. McLeod-Lindsay grew up in Glasgow. At age 16 he migrated to Australia under that country's assisted migration scheme. McLeod-Lindsay was a “ ten pound pom”. In Australia McLeod-Lindsay was apprenticed in the printing trade and served in the Australian Citizens Military Forces, the then name of the Australian Army Reserve. Leith Ratten
Leith McDonald Ratten was a convicted murderer from Echuca, Australia whose case ignited controversy and national interest in the 1970s. Leading lawyers were convinced of his innocence. He died in January 2012. Background On May 7, 1970, members of the Victoria Police stationed in Echuca responded to an emergency call at a home in Mitchell Street. They found a heavily-pregnant woman, Beverley Ratten, lying dead in the kitchen from a shotgun wound to the torso. Her upset husband, Leith Ratten, was removed for questioning. Beverley would later be interred in the Cheltenham Memorial Park, Melbourne. Hugh Keays-Byrne (18 May 1947 – 2 December 2020) was a British-Australian actor. Rodney Mullinar (born 1942) is a British Australian actor, noted for his roles on Australian television. John Stuart Gaden (born 13 November 1941) is an Australian actor and director known particularly for his stage career, although he has also made some film and television appearances.
