Beyond Race
''Beyond Race Magazine'' (often abbreviated to ''Beyond Race'' or ''BRM'') is a quarterly magazine based in New York City, founded in 2005 by David Terra, and dedicated to "groundbreaking music and culture". The first issue of ''Beyond Race'' was published in the summer of 2006. On May 18, 20, and 21, 2010, ''BRM'' ran benefit shows in order to raise money to continue operating. On November 16, 2010, Verde Media Group Inc. acquired 100% ownership of Beyondrace.com. In 2013, VMGI transferred ownership of Beyond Race Magazine and Beyondrace.com to its editor-in-chief. It is primarily centered on independent and emerging artists, covering music, film, and other arts, such as literature, graffiti, tattooing, and visual arts. The publication also reports heavily on progressive issues and culture, in general. Dub Trio
Dub Trio is a dub/rock cross-over band from Brooklyn, New York City, New York. History Dub Trio consists of bassist Stu Brooks, guitarist DP Holmes, and drummer Joe Tomino. With the addition of electronic, rock, punk and heavy metal, the group pays homage to King Tubby's original dub style, while recreating studio trickery live on stage using various delay pedals, keyboards, and samplers. While Tomino can add delay or loop effects to his own drums, each member of the band has the ability to "dub" the other via microphones on Tomino's kit running to delay effects on both Holmes' and Brooks' pedal boards. In 2004, Dub Trio released the debut album, ''Exploring the Dangers Of''. Nada Surf
Nada Surf is an American alternative rock band formed in New York City in 1992, consisting of Matthew Caws (guitar, vocals), Ira Elliot (drums), and Daniel Lorca (bass, backing vocals). After initially operating under the name Helicopter, Caws and Lorca switched to Nada Surf. In 1995, Ira Elliot joined on drums, and they met Ric Ocasek, former frontman of the Cars, who produced their debut album, '' High/Low'', in 1996. Despite experiencing significant success with their single " Popular" and touring extensively, their follow-up album, '' The Proximity Effect'', was not well received by their record label, Elektra, resulting in the band being dropped, and they self-released the album. Subatomic Sound System
Subatomic Sound System was founded in 1999 by Emch and Noah Shachtman it is an American record label and collective of musicians, producers, DJs, and visual artists from a variety of backgrounds and traditions. In late 2008 the Subatomic Sound System garnered attention for a limited edition vinyl 12" featuring their collaboration with Vienna's Dubblestandart and dub inventor Lee "Scratch" Perry. These were Perry's first songs in the dubstep genre, one of the first recorded examples of a connection between the popular UK-based electronic genre that emerged in the early 2000's and the Jamaican dub from the 1970's. Tony Louis Cottrell (born May 5, 1976), better known as Hi-Tek, is an American rapper and music producer from Cincinnati, Ohio. He is best known for his work with Talib Kweli. His father is singer Willie Cottrell of the Willie Cottrell Band, whom Hi-Tek featured on his second album, '' Hi-Teknology 2''. Career 1996–2000 Hi-Tek grew up in the West End, Cincinnati. He started his career with hip hop group Mood and had a regional hit with "Hustle on the Side". That song was made for Mood's album ''Doom'', which featured amongst others Brooklyn MC Talib Kweli. Garland Jeffreys (born June 29, 1943) is an American singer and songwriter in rock and roll, reggae, blues, and soul music. Career Jeffreys is from Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, of African American and Puerto Rican heritage. He majored in art history at Syracuse University, where he met Lou Reed before The Velvet Underground became active. In 1966, Jeffreys began to play in Manhattan nightclubs including Gerde's Folk City, The Bitter End, Gaslight, Kenny's Castaways and later Reno Sweeney, where he began to explore racially conscious themes in his work, sometimes utilizing blackface masks and a rag doll named Ramon in performance. Cevin Soling is an American writer, filmmaker, philosopher, musician, music producer, and artist.
