Bernard Krisher
Bernard Krisher (August 9, 1931 – March 5, 2019) was a German-born American journalist and philanthropist. Biography Krisher was born in Frankfurt. His family left Germany in 1937 when he was six and travelled via Paris and Lisbon, eventually settling in New York City in January 1941. At age 12, Krisher published his own magazine and edited his high school and Queens College newspapers. Later he worked for the New York Herald Tribune and the New York World-Telegram & Sun. After graduating from college, Krisher was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean War but due to his German language skills was stationed in Heidelberg at the US Army's press and information division. In 1958 he visited Japan for the first time. From 1959 to 1960 Krisher spent a year doing Japanese area and language studies at Columbia University as a Ford Foundation Advanced International Reporting Fellow. Norodom Sihanouk
Norodom Sihanouk (; km, នរោត្តម សីហនុ, ; 31 October 192215 October 2012) was a Cambodian statesman, Sangkum and FUNCINPEC politician, film director, and composer who led Cambodia in various capacities throughout his long career, most often as both King and Prime Minister of Cambodia. In Cambodia, he is known as Samdech Euv ( km, សម្តេចឪ, link=no, ; meaning "King Father"). Sihanouk Hospital Center of HOPE (SHCH) is a free non-governmental hospital in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, which is helping to rebuild the country's medical infrastructure by treating patients and training medical personnel. It is named for King Norodam Sihanouk. History An estimated 2 million people had died in the Cambodian genocide, and in 1979 only 49 doctors remained alive in the country. Between 1994–1996, three international nonprofit organizations worked to establish a free hospital in Cambodia: Japan Relief for Cambodia (founded by Bernard Krisher), WorldMate, and HOPE ''worldwide''. The Khmer Rouge (; ; km, ខ្មែរក្រហម, ; ) is the name that was popularly given to members of the Communist Party of Kampuchea (CPK) and by extension to the regime through which the CPK ruled Cambodia between 1975 and 1979. The name was coined in the 1960s by then Chief of State Norodom Sihanouk to describe his country's heterogeneous, communist-led dissidents, with whom he allied after his 1970 overthrow. The Khmer Rouge army was slowly built up in the jungles of eastern Cambodia during the late 1960s, supported by the North Vietnamese army, the Viet Cong, the Pathet Lao, and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
