Bees Creek
Bees Creek is an outer rural area of Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. It is 33 km southeast of the Darwin central business district. It is the council seat of the local government area of the Litchfield Municipality, although most council facilities, public amenities and the actual Municipal offices are in the neighbouring locality of Freds Pass. Bees Creek is mostly rural, with large residential blocks often not served by town sewers or sealed roads. Nevertheless, the area is popular with those wishing to enjoy a rural lifestyle within an easy commuting distance of the city. Power and Water Corporation, trading as PowerWater, is a corporation in the Northern Territory of Australia owned by the Government of the Northern Territory. It is the Northern Territory's only provider of electricity, water and sewerage services. Darwinbus
Darwinbus is the official operational name of the public bus network which operates within the Greater Darwin region, this includes the satellite cities Palmerston and Casuarina, in addition to the Darwin Rural Area in the Northern Territory. The network is exclusively operated by CDC Northern Territory under a six-year contract with the Northern Territory Government starting from 1 July 2022, and in the financial year prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, carried approximately 3.5 million passengers, equivalent to a 5-6% mode share. Coolalinga
Coolalinga is an outer suburban area in Darwin. It is south east of central Darwin, south east of Palmerston and east of the proposed city of Weddell. Its Local Government Area is the Litchfield Municipality. The name was first used by Len Cant for his store and caravan park on the Stuart Highway. Since Coolalinga Store, the area has become an important commercial centre for the Shire. Shopping and amenities Coolalinga is a major service centre for the outer rural Litchfield Shire and is a growing commercial centre. North Australia Railway
The North Australia Railway was a narrow gauge railway in the Northern Territory of Australia which ran from the territory capital of Darwin, once known as Palmerston, to Birdum, just south of Larrimah. Initially its name was the ''Palmerston and Pine Creek Railway''. The first section was opened 1889, the last in 1929. The railway closed in 1976. The South Eastern Times
The ''South Eastern Times'' is a newspaper established in Millicent, South Australia in 1891, advertised on its masthead as covering the area which includes Millicent, Robe, Beachport, Tantanoola, Kalangadoo and Southend. After 129 years of publishing, however, the newspaper (along with sister publication ''The Pennant'') was discontinued on 21 August 2020. However, in March 2022 the newspaper was relaunched by TBW Today Pty Ltd after an 18-month hiatus. History A weekly paper named the ''Millicent Times'' was founded in July 1891 by Roland Campbell and was taken over in 1894 by his brother Donald Campbell. The Campbells severed connection with the paper in 1901. It was taken over by a consortium of businessmen led by Henrich Wilhelm Altschwager, and in 1906 given a new title, though the old name persisted, at least colloquially. Thomas Walker Bee
Thomas Walker Bee (c. 1822 – 12 January 1910) was a public servant in the early days of the colony of South Australia. History Bee and his wife arrived in Adelaide in 1853. Within a few years Mrs Bee was advertising that she was taking young ladies for classes in French, Italian, music and other subjects at their home in Norwood. In 1855 Bee joined the South Australian civil service as a clerk with the Emigration department, handling the settlement of large numbers of single female immigrants, mostly from Ireland. It had been anticipated that they would fill the pressing need for domestic servants, but those sent out by the Emigration Commissioners were mostly unskilled and uneducated and more interested in finding husbands than in working for a living. George Goyder
George Woodroffe Goyder (24 June 1826 – 2 November 1898) was a surveyor in the Colony of South Australia during the latter half of the nineteenth century. He rose rapidly in the civil service, becoming Assistant Surveyor-General by 1856 and the Surveyor General of South Australia in 1861. He is remembered today for Goyder's Line of rainfall, a line used in South Australia to demarcate land climatically suitable for arable farming from that suitable only for light grazing, and for the siting, planning and initial development of Darwin, the Northern Territory capital and principal population centre. However, Goyder was an avid researcher into the lands of South Australia (including the present-day Northern Territory) and made recommendations to a great number of settlers in the newly developing colony, especially to those exploiting the newly discovered mineral resources of the state.
