Manton Dam
Manton Dam is a small concrete arch dam on the Manton River, approximately south of Darwin, Northern Territory in Australia. The dam was originally constructed by the Department of Defence (Australia), Department of Defence during World War II to provide a reliable supply of fresh water to Darwin, completed in 1942. The reservoir itself is now mostly used for recreation, such as fishing, boating and water skiing, surrounded by a conservation area for native flora and fauna. Current status The much larger Darwin River Dam was commissioned in 1972, with Manton Dam retained for emergency supply. Since then, PowerWater has maintained the dam and infrastructure in an inactive state. Since 1989, the Manton Dam Recreation Area has been open to the public within the portfolio of Parks & Wildlife Commission. Although camping and swimming are not permitted, it is a popular venue for recreational water sports. The reservoir is divided into three distinct zones, allowing separation between ...

Channel Island Power Station
Channel Island Power Station is the largest power station in the Northern Territory of Australia. It is positioned on an island in the Middle Arm of Darwin Harbour, supplying electricity to the Darwin-Katherine Interconnected System. It is currently owned and operated by Territory Generation. Most of the island surrounding the facility is protected from development as the Channel Island Conservation Reserve. History Channel Island Power Station was built and commissioned in 1986 by the Power and Water Authority, a predecessor of PowerWater, replacing the Stokes Hill Power Station. At the time of commissioning, Channel Island was the first combined cycle power plant in Australia, and the first to feature distributive digital control systems with screen-based controls. In 2008, it was supplemented by the nearby Weddell Power Station which became operational that year, however Channel Island still provided 48% of the Territory's total power generation, with an installed capacit ...

Darwin, Northern Territory
Darwin ( Larrakia: ') is the capital city of the Northern Territory, Australia. The city has nearly 53% of the Northern Territory's population, with 139,902 at the 2021 census. It is the smallest, wettest, and most northerly of the Australian capital cities and serves as the Top End's regional centre. Darwin's proximity to Southeast Asia makes it a key link between Australia and countries such as Indonesia and Timor-Leste. The Stuart Highway begins in Darwin and extends southerly across central Australia through Tennant Creek and Alice Springs, concluding in Port Augusta, South Australia. The city is built upon a low bluff overlooking Darwin Harbour. Darwin's suburbs extend to Lee Point in the north and to Berrimah in the east. The Stuart Highway extends to Darwin's eastern satellite city of Palmerston and its suburbs. The Darwin region, like much of the Top End, has a tropical climate, with a wet and dry season. A period known locally as "the build up" leading up ...

Weddell Power Station
Weddell Power Station is a 129 MW natural gas-fired power station in the Northern Territory, located at Wickham. Owned and operated by Territory Generation, it is the second largest power station in the Northern Territory and supplies the Darwin-Katherine Interconnected System. History Construction began in 2007 and the station was commissioned by PowerWater in 2008, initially with two General Electric LM6000PD gas turbines, brought online in 2008 and 2009 respectively, providing an installed capacity of 86 MW. At the time of commissioning, these generators were the largest single units in the Darwin-Katherine power network, with each delivering approximately 10% of the total capacity. The facility is connected to the privately operated Wickham Point Pipeline, completed in July 2009. This allows the generators to be fed by both offshore projects via the Darwin Liquefied Natural Gas Plant, or through the existing pipeline linking Darwin with the Amadeus Basin gas fields. A t ...

Electricity
Electricity is the set of physical phenomena associated with the presence and motion of matter possessing an electric charge. Electricity is related to magnetism, both being part of the phenomenon of electromagnetism, as described by Maxwell's equations. Common phenomena are related to electricity, including lightning, static electricity, electric heating, electric discharges and many others. The presence of either a positive or negative electric charge produces an electric field. The motion of electric charges is an electric current and produces a magnetic field. In most applications, Coulomb's law determines the force acting on an electric charge. Electric potential is the Work (physics), work done to move an electric charge from one point to another within an electric field, typically measured in volts. Electricity plays a central role in many modern technologies, serving in electric power where electric current is used to energise equipment, and in electronics dealing w ...

Government Agencies Of The Northern Territory
A government is the system or group of people governing an organized community, generally a state. In the case of its broad associative definition, government normally consists of legislature, executive, and judiciary. Government is a means by which organizational policies are enforced, as well as a mechanism for determining policy. In many countries, the government has a kind of constitution, a statement of its governing principles and philosophy. While all types of organizations have governance, the term ''government'' is often used more specifically to refer to the approximately 200 independent national governments and subsidiary organizations. The main types of modern political systems recognized are democracies, totalitarian regimes, and, sitting between these two, authoritarian regimes with a variety of hybrid regimes. Modern classification systems also include monarchies as a standalone entity or as a hybrid system of the main three. Historically prevalent forms ...

Water Companies Of Australia
Water is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula . It is a transparent, tasteless, odorless, and Color of water, nearly colorless chemical substance. It is the main constituent of Earth's hydrosphere and the fluids of all known living organisms (in which it acts as a solvent). It is vital for all known forms of life, despite not providing food energy or organic micronutrients. Its chemical formula, , indicates that each of its molecules contains one oxygen and two hydrogen atoms, connected by covalent bonds. The hydrogen atoms are attached to the oxygen atom at an angle of 104.45°. In liquid form, is also called "water" at standard temperature and pressure. Because Earth's environment is relatively close to water's triple point, water exists on Earth as a solid, a liquid, and a gas. It forms precipitation in the form of rain and aerosols in the form of fog. Clouds consist of suspended droplets of water and ice, its solid state. When finely divided, crystalline ice ...

Government-owned Companies Of The Northern Territory
State ownership, also called public ownership or government ownership, is the ownership of an industry, asset, property, or enterprise by the national government of a country or state, or a public body representing a community, as opposed to an individual or private party. Public ownership specifically refers to industries selling goods and services to consumers and differs from public goods and government services financed out of a government's general budget. Public ownership can take place at the national, regional, local, or municipal levels of government; or can refer to non-governmental public ownership vested in autonomous public enterprises. Public ownership is one of the three major forms of property ownership, differentiated from private, collective/cooperative, and common ownership. In market-based economies, state-owned assets are often managed and operated as joint-stock corporations with a government owning all or a controlling stake of the company's shares. Thi ...

Darwin River Dam
The Darwin River Dam is in Australia's Northern Territory on the Darwin River, Northern Territory, Darwin River. The water catchment it contains is the major source for the city of Darwin, Northern Territory, Darwin. The dam can hold up to 259,000 megalitres of water () which is half the volume in Sydney Harbour or eleven times bigger than the Manton Dam. The Darwin River Dam is an embankment-type dam. The dam relies on the annual wet season to be replenished. It is ungated with no spillway regulation possible, and toward the end of the wet season, the dam can overflow. Most years spilling occurs, and is considered normal. Depending on rainfall amounts, this overflow can last from days to weeks. The water in this dam is considered to be one of the most pristine on Earth. In order to preserve this quality, the catchment and reservoir policy prohibits recreational use with substantial penalties imposed for trespassing. The reservoir is free of ''Cabomba'', an aquatic weed genus tha ...
