Beck Discography
The discography of Beck, an American rock musician, singer-songwriter, record producer and multi-instrumentalist, consists of 14 studio albums, one compilation album, one remix album, four extended plays (EPs) and 60 singles. With a pop art collage of musical styles, oblique and ironic lyrics, and postmodern arrangements incorporating samples, drum machines, live instrumentation and sound effects, Beck has been hailed by critics and the public throughout his musical career as being amongst the most creative and idiosyncratic musicians of 1990s and 2000s alternative rock. Beck released his debut album '' Golden Feelings'' through independent record label Sonic Enemy in 1993. Later that year, his first singles, " Loser" and "MTV Makes Me Want to Smoke Crack", helped to quickly gain the attention of major record labels. In early 1994, after issuing '' Stereopathetic Soulmanure'' on Los Angeles-based independent Flipside Records, Beck made his major label debut with DGC Record ...

Mellow Gold
''Mellow Gold'' is the third studio album by American musician Beck, released on March 1, 1994, by DGC Records as Beck's major label debut album. Critics noted the album's hybrid of various styles including rock, hip hop, folk, blues, psychedelia, and country, as well as ironic, witty lyrics. Its decidedly anti-commercial attitude led to it becoming an unexpected commercial success, peaking at number thirteen in the United States and eventually being certified platinum. As of July 2008, ''Mellow Gold'' has sold over 1.2 million copies in the United States. Background In a 1994 interview with ''Rolling Stone'', Beck said of the album: The whole concept of ''Mellow Gold'' is that it's like a satanic K-tel record that's been found in a trash dumpster, quite matter-of-factly. A few people have molested it and slept with it and half-swallowed it before spitting it out. Someone played poker with it, someone tried to smoke it. Then the record was taken to Morocco and covered with ...

Midnite Vultures
''Midnite Vultures'' is the seventh studio album by American musician Beck, released on November 16, 1999, by DGC Records. While similar to most of Beck's previous albums in its exploration of widely varying styles, it did not achieve the same blockbuster success as his breakthrough album ''Odelay'', but was still critically acclaimed and commercially successful. Recording Working titles for the album included ''Zatyricon'' (the name of a song released in 2000 as a B-side on the " Nicotine & Gravy" single and later included on the ''Beck'' EP) and ''I Can Smell the V.D. in the Club Tonight'' (a line from "Milk & Honey"). Influences Several songs were directly inspired by other songs: "Get Real Paid" features a spiraling sequencer motif reminiscent of Kraftwerk's "Home Computer"; a synth breakdown in "Milk & Honey" echoes a similar riff in Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five's " The Message"; "Beautiful Way" came about after listening to The Velvet Underground's "Countess ...

Mutations (Beck Album)
''Mutations'' is the sixth studio album by the American songwriter Beck, released on November 3, 1998, by DGC Records. Though less commercially successful than the preceding ''Odelay'', it won a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album. Background and recording ''Mutations'' was produced by Nigel Godrich, who was known at that point for producing Radiohead's OK Computer. The album contains a number of Moog keyboards, acoustic guitars, and string arrangements.AllMusic credits entry for ''Mutations' The production style was very different from that of Beck's previous album ''Odelay'', which was heavily influenced by hip hop music and contained many samples. The lyrics are also much more somber and serious than those on ''Odelay'', apparent in the songs "Nobody's Fault but My Own" and "Dead Melodies". Artwork and packaging The record's front cover, a picture of Beck tangled in plastic wrap, was taken by the music photographer Autumn de Wilde. Art direction was by designe ...

Double Platinum
Music recording certification is a system of certifying that a music Sound recording and reproduction, recording has shipped, sold, or streamed a certain number of units. The threshold quantity varies by type (such as album, single, music video) and by nation or territory (see List of music recording certifications). Almost all countries follow variations of the RIAA certification categories, which are named after precious materials (gold, platinum and diamond). The threshold required for these awards depends upon the population of the territory where the recording is released. Typically, they are awarded only to international releases and are awarded individually for each country where the album is sold. Different sales levels, some perhaps 10 times greater than others, may exist for different music media (for example: videos versus albums, singles, or music download). History The original gold and silver record awards were presented to artists by their own record compani ...

The New Pollution
"The New Pollution" is a song by American musician Beck, released in February 1997 by DGC Records as the third single from his fifth album, ''Odelay'' (1996). It was written by Beck with John King and Michael Simpson, and produced by Beck with Dust Brothers. The song samples "Venus" by Joe Thomas. In the US, "The New Pollution" peaked at number 78 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 and number nine on the ''Billboard'' Alternative Airplay chart. In Europe, it was a top-10 hit in Iceland, peaking at number nine. The music video for the song was directed by Beck himself. Critical reception Retrospectively, Justin Chadwick from Albumism named "The New Pollution" one of the "unequivocal standouts" of the ''Odelay'' album, describing it as "buoyant" and "exhilarating, pop-friendly fare". David Stubbs from ''Melody Maker'' felt the song "is as near to anthemic as Beck gets. Nicking the bassline from The Beatles' 'Taxman', it's shot through with a recurring children's TV piccolo motif and wa ...

Where It's At (Beck Song)
"Where It's At" is a song by American alternative rock musician Beck, released in May 1996 by DGC and Bong Load as the first single from his fifth album, ''Odelay'' (1996). Beck wrote the song in 1995 with its co-producers John King and Michael Simpson, and premiered it at Lollapalooza the same year, in a version very similar to its incarnation on ''Odelay''. He has performed the song often since 1995, frequently experimenting with the music and lyrics. Its music video was directed by Steve Hanft. Production "Where It's At" has a number of spoken samples that Beck and the Dust Brothers incorporated into it. Many of these come from an obscure sex education album titled ''Sex for Teens: (Where It's At)'', a subtitle Beck borrowed. Other vocal samples incorporated into "Where It's At" come from "Needle to the Groove" by old-school hip hop group Mantronix ("we've got two turntables and a microphone..."), as well as The Frogs ("that was a good drum break"). The song also referen ...

Since its release, the album has appeared in numerous publications' lists of the greatest of the 1990s and of all time. Recording The sessions for what would become ''Odelay'' originally began as a subdued, acoustic affair. In 1994, Beck started to record tracks for his follow-up to '' Mellow Gold'' with Bong Load producers Tom Rothrock and Rob Schnapf. Only the tracks "Ramshackle", "Feather in Your Cap", and "Brother" from these sessions have been released, all of which are acoustic, sparse, and melancholic. Built to Spill is an American indie rock band that formed in Boise, Idaho, in 1992. Centered on lead vocalist and guitarist Doug Martsch, the only permanent member, Built to Spill has released nine albums since its inception. Having received consistent critical acclaim throughout their career, three of the band's albums—''There's Nothing Wrong with Love, Perfect from Now On'' and '' Keep It Like a Secret''—placed in the top 50 of ''Pitchfork'''s Top 100 Albums of the 1990s list. The Presidents Of The United States Of America (band)
The Presidents of the United States of America (occasionally referred to as PUSA, PotUSA, the Presidents of the USA, or simply the Presidents) were an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1993. The three-piece group's initial lineup consisted of vocalist and bassist Chris Ballew, drummer Jason Finn, and guitarist Dave Dederer. The band became popular in the mid-1990s for their hits " Lump" and " Peaches"—released in 1995 and 1996, respectively—which helped their self-titled debut album go triple Platinum. The group broke up for the first time in late 1997, since Ballew wanted a solo career; they performed a farewell concert early the next year. They reunited in 2002. In 2004, Dederer left the group and was replaced by Andrew McKeag. The Presidents privately disbanded in 2015, and the news was made public a year later. History Early years (1993–1994) The band was formed in late 1993 by Chris Ballew (bass guitar and lead vocals) and Dave Dederer (guit ...

Beat Happening
Beat Happening was an American indie pop band formed in Olympia, Washington, in 1982. Calvin Johnson, Heather Lewis, and Bret Lunsford have been the band's continual members. Beat Happening were early leaders in the American indie pop and lo-fi movements, noted for their use of primitive recording techniques, disregard for the technical aspects of musicianship, and songs with subject matters of a carefree or coy nature. History Formation Beat Happening met while attending the Evergreen State College and began recording in 1983. The band took its name from a student art film, ''Beatnik Happening'', made by Bret's girlfriend. The band's basic line-up was drums, guitar, and vocals, though when they formed, their only instruments were a pair of maracas and a Sears Silvertone guitar purchased at a thrift shop. Heather once joked in an interview that the history of the band could be told through a list of the various people whose drums they had borrowed. Heather and Calvin had been ...

The record label has been called "key to the development of independent music" since the 1980s. The label was founded by Beat Happening frontman Calvin Johnson and managed for many years by Candice Pedersen. Many early releases were on the cassette tape format, making the label one of the longest lasting reflections of the cassette culture of the 1970s and early 1980s. Although itself releasing primarily offbeat pop music and indie rock, the DIY label is regarded as one of the pioneers of riot grrrl movement and the second wave of American punk in the 1990s. History Calvin Johnson founded K Records with the intention of distributing cassette tapes of a local band, The Supreme Cool Beings, which he had recorded performing for his radio show at Evergreen State College radio station KAOS (FM).
