Built To Spill
Built to Spill is an American indie rock band that formed in Boise, Idaho, in 1992. Centered on lead vocalist and guitarist Doug Martsch, the only permanent member, Built to Spill has released nine albums since its inception. Martsch originally envisioned the band to feature a changing set of backing musicians for each album, but eventually settled with a stable lineup for over a decade before returning to his original plan in 2012. Having received consistent critical acclaim throughout their career, three of the band's albums—''There's Nothing Wrong with Love, Perfect from Now On'' and '' Keep It Like a Secret''—placed in the top 50 of ''Pitchfork'''s Top 100 Albums of the 1990s list. Treefort Music Fest
Treefort Music Fest is a five-day indie rock festival held at several venues throughout downtown Boise, Idaho in late March. The inaugural festival took place from March 20–23, 2012, featuring Built to Spill, The Joy Formidable, Poliça, and other acts. Treefort has been called "the west’s best SXSW alternative" and "Boise's preeminent artistic, cultural, and musical happening." The festival is organized by Duck Club, a local concert promoter. Concerts primarily take place at Julia Davis Park with events hosted at over 20 other venues across downtown Boise. Several smaller spin-off festivals take place during Treefort. Indie rock is a Music subgenre, subgenre of rock music that originated in the United Kingdom, United States and New Zealand in the early to mid-1980s. Although the term was originally used to describe rock music released through independent record labels, by the 1990s it became more widely associated with the music such bands produced. The sound of indie rock has its origins in the New Zealand Dunedin sound of the Chills, Tall Dwarfs, the Clean and the Verlaines, and early 1980s college rock radio stations who would frequently play jangle pop bands like the Smiths and R.E.M. ''Ultimate Alternative Wavers'' is the debut studio album by American indie rock band Built to Spill. The line-up consisted of Doug Martsch on guitar and vocals, Brett Netson on guitar and bass, and Ralf Youtz on drums, although there was some variation in instrumentation on a few tracks. The album was recorded at Audio Lab in Boise, Idaho, in the fall of 1992, and released in 1993 on C/Z Records. It was re-released in late 2006. The song title "Nowhere Nothin' Fuckup" is the title of a song by the main character, Jason Taverner, in Philip K. Dick's '' Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said''. The song's lyrics, also, are in large part borrowed from The Velvet Underground's "Oh! Sweet Nuthin'". Thrasher is an American skateboarding media brand founded in January 1981 by Eric Swenson and Fausto Vitello, who also founded Independent Truck Company, and officially launched as a skateboard magazine. Since the 1990s, Thrasher has expanded its presence in television, video production, online blogging and merchandising. Exquisite corpse (from the original French term ', ) is a method by which a collection of words or images is collectively assembled. Each collaborator adds to a composition in sequence, either by following a rule (e.g., "The ''adjective'' ''noun'' ''adverb'' ''verb'' the ''adjective'' ''noun''." as in "The green duck sweetly sang the dreadful dirge.") or by being allowed to see only the end of what the previous person contributed. TreePeople is an educational and training environmental advocacy organization based in Los Angeles, California. The TreePeople organization advocates and works to support sustainable urban ecosystems in the Greater Los Angeles area through education, volunteer community-based action, and advocacy. Organization history TreePeople was founded in Los Angeles in 1973 by an 18-year-old activist Andy Lipkis. Lipkis and a group of other teenagers began planting trees three years prior at summer camp in the San Bernardino Mountains. Lipkis heard that smog from Los Angeles was drifting up to the mountains and killing the forest. He rallied his fellow campers, tore up a parking lot, and planted smog-tolerant trees. ''Keep It Like a Secret'' is the fourth studio album released by American indie rock band Built to Spill, and their second for Warner Bros. Records. The initial tracks for the album were recorded in November 1997 at Bear Creek Studios in Woodinville, Washington by Phil Ek, with overdubs recorded on mid-1998 at Avast! Recording Co. in Seattle, Washington. ''Keep It Like a Secret'' was released on February 2, 1999. The album spawned two EPs: '' Carry the Zero'' and ''Center of the Universe''. Background After feeling burned out from constructing the lengthy songs on his previous album, ''Perfect from Now On'', Doug Martsch made a conscious decision to write shorter, more concise songs for ''Keep It Like a Secret''.
