Basilio Cascella
Basilio Cascella (Pescara, 1 October 1860 - Rome, 24 July 1950) was an Italian artist, active from the late nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth century. Biography In 1860, Cascella was born to Francesco Paolo Cascella, a tailor, and his wife, Marianna Siciliano. The family moved to Ortona in 1870. It was in this city that Basilio spent his childhood and finished elementary school. He then attended the Artieri night school in Pescara and worked as an apprentice in the Luigi Salomone printing plant. His first drawings date back to 1874, copied from the prints. His father wanted Cascella to help in the tailor shop, but the boy had little interest in becoming a tailor. Instead, in April 1875, he went to Rome and was hired as an apprentice at lithography in the Luigi Salomone printing plant. The Verismo (meaning "realism", from Italian ''vero'', meaning "true") refers to a 19th-century Italian painting style. This style was practiced most characteristically by the " Macchiaioli" group of painters, who were forerunners of the French Impressionists. Filippo Tommaso Marinetti
Filippo Tommaso Emilio Marinetti (; 22 December 1876 – 2 December 1944) was an Italian poet, editor, art theorist, and founder of the Futurist movement. He was associated with the utopian and Symbolist artistic and literary community Abbaye de Créteil between 1907 and 1908. Marinetti is best known as the author of the first ''Futurist Manifesto'', which was written and published in 1909, and as a co-author of the Fascist Manifesto, in 1919. Gennaro Finamore
Januarius ( ; la, Ianuarius; Neapolitan and it, Gennaro), also known as , was Bishop of Benevento and is a martyr and saint of the Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church. While no contemporary sources on his life are preserved, later sources and legends claim that he died during the Great Persecution, which ended with Diocletian's retirement in 305. Umberto Saba
Umberto Saba (9 March 1883 – 26 August 1957) was an Italian poet and novelist, born Umberto Poli in the cosmopolitan Mediterranean port of Trieste when it was the fourth largest city of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Poli assumed the pen name "Saba" in 1910, and his name was officially changed to Umberto Saba in 1928. From 1919 he was the proprietor of an antiquarian bookshop in Trieste. He suffered from depression for all of his adult life. Costantino Barbella
Costantino Barbella (January 31, 1853 in Chieti – December 5, 1925) was an Italian sculptor, known as ''il Michetti della scultura''. He began his career by modeling terracotta figurines for churches and Nativity Scenes (Presepe). In 1872, Francesco Paolo Michetti encouraged him to use stipend from the province to study at the Istituto di Belle Arti in Naples. He studied there with Stanislao Lista. He was highly prolific in creating small terracotta and bronze statuary, much of it depicting country folk dancing or in animated movement. He also made a few portraits, including of Pope Leo XIII. His work was exhibited throughout Europe, commonly winning awards. Francesco Paolo Tosti
Sir Francesco Paolo Tosti KCVO (9 April 1846, Ortona, Abruzzo2 December 1916, Rome) was an Italian composer and music teacher. Life Francesco Paolo Tosti received most of his music education in his native Ortona, Italy, as well as the conservatory in Naples. Tosti began his music education at the Royal College of San Pietro a Majella at the age of eleven. He studied violin and composition with Saverio Mercadante, who became so impressed with Tosti that he appointed him student teacher, which afforded the young man a meagre salary of sixty francs a month. Poor health forced Tosti to leave his studies and return home to Ortona. He was confined to his bed for several months. Michele Cascella
Michele Cascella (7 September 1892 – 31 August 1989) was an Italian artist. Primarily known for his oil paintings and watercolours, he also worked in ceramics, lithography, and textiles. He exhibited regularly at the Venice Biennale from 1924 until 1942, and his works are owned by major museums in Italy and Europe, including Victoria and Albert Museum in London, Galerie nationale du Jeu de Paume in Paris, and Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna in Rome. Tommaso Cascella senior (1890–1968) was an Italian painter, known for brightly colored landscapes. Biography He was born in Ortona in the Abruzzo.
