Baron Aldenham
Baron Aldenham, of Aldenham in the county of Hertfordshire, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom that was created on 31 January 1896 for the businessman Hucks Gibbs. He was head of the family firm of Antony Gibbs & Sons (founded by his grandfather Antony Gibbs) and a director and Governor of the Bank of England. Gibbs also briefly sat as a Conservative Member of Parliament for the City of London. His fourth son Herbert Cokayne Gibbs was created Baron Hunsdon of Hunsdon in 1923 (see below). Lord Aldenham was succeeded by his eldest son, the second Baron. He also represented the City of London in the House of Commons as a Conservative. He was succeeded by his son, the third Baron. On the latter's death in 1939 the barony of Aldenham was inherited by his cousin the second Baron Hunsdon of Hunsdon (see Baron Hunsdon for earlier history of this title). Aldenham
Aldenham is a village and Civil parishes in England, civil parish in the borough of Hertsmere in Hertfordshire, England. The parish includes Radlett and Letchmore Heath as well as Aldenham village itself. The village of Aldenham lies north-east of Watford and southwest of Radlett. Aldenham was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, and is one of Hertsmere's 14 conservation areas. George Gibbs, 1st Baron Wraxall
George Abraham Gibbs, 1st Baron Wraxall, (6 July 1873 – 28 October 1931) was a British Conservative politician. Early life Educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford, Gibbs was the eldest of the seven sons of Major Antony Gibbs and Janet Louisa Merivale, daughter of John Louis Merivale. His grandfather, William Gibbs, was the younger brother of George Henry Gibbs, the father of Hucks Gibbs, 1st Baron Aldenham, while his great-grandfather, Antony Gibbs, was the founder of the firm Antony Gibbs & Sons, bankers and merchants. Gerald is a masculine given name derived from the Germanic languages prefix ''ger-'' ("spear") and suffix ''-wald'' ("rule"). Gerald is a Norman French variant of the Germanic name. An Old English equivalent name was Garweald, the likely original name of Gerald of Mayo, a British Roman Catholic monk who established a monastery in Mayo, Ireland in 670. Herbert Gibbs, 1st Baron Hunsdon Of Hunsdon
Herbert Cokayne Gibbs, 1st Baron Hunsdon of Hunsdon (14 May 1854 – 22 May 1935), was a British businessman. Hunsdon was the fourth son of Hucks Gibbs, 1st Baron Aldenham, and Louisa Anne Adams, and was educated at Winchester and Trinity College, Cambridge. He was a partner in the family firm of Antony Gibbs & Sons, and also served as Commissioner and Chairman of the Public Works Loan Board. In 1908, he bought the Hunsdon Manor and the Briggens estate in Hertfordshire, and served as a justice of the peace and as High Sheriff of the county. In 1923, he was raised to the peerage as Baron Hunsdon of Hunsdon, of Briggens in the County of Hertford. Lord Hunsdon married Anna Maria, daughter of Richard Durant, in 1885. They had three sons and three daughters. Their sixth child, Sir Humphrey Gibbs, was Governor of Southern Rhodesia. Vicary Tyser Gibbs, 6th Baron Aldenham, 4th Baron Hunsdon of Hunsdon (born 9 June 1948), is a British peer, the son of Antony Gibbs, 5th Baron Aldenham. He succeeded to the titles Baron Aldenham and Baron Hunsdon of Hunsdon on 25 January 1986. He served in the House of Lords from 25 January 1986 until 11 November 1999. Captain Walter Durant Gibbs, 4th Baron Aldenham, 2nd Baron Hunsdon of Hunsdon (11 August 1888 – 30 May 1969), was a British peer, the son of Herbert Cokayne Gibbs, 1st Baron Hunsdon of Hunsdon. He succeeded to the title 2nd Baron Hunsdon on 22 May 1935. He succeeded to the title 4th Baron Aldenham on 21 March 1939, on the death of his cousin, the 3rd Baron, who died without male issue.
