Baptodoris
''Baptodoris'' is a genus of sea slugs, dorid nudibranchs, shell-less marine gastropod mollusks in the family Discodorididae.Bouchet, P.; Gofas, S. (2010)''Baptodoris'' Bergh, 1884.In: MolluscaBase (2016). Accessed through: World Register of Marine Species on 2016-12-14 The genus Baptodoris was originally classified by Bergh in 1891 in the subfamily Platydorididae (despite the use of suffix -idea), a subfamily of the family Dorididae. In 1934 Alice Pruvot-Fol elevated this subfamily to its new status as family Platydorididae. In 2002 Valdés has given the name Discodorididae precedence over the name Platydorididae. The Sea Slug Forum however classifies this genus in the family Dorididae. Species Species in the genus ''Baptodoris'' include: * ''Baptodoris cinnabarina'' Bergh, 1884 (junior synonym ''Platydoris maculata'' Bouchet, 1977 ) - type species of the genus * '' Baptodoris mimetica'' Gosliner, 1991 * ''Baptodoris peruviana'' (d'Orbigny, 1837) * ''Baptodoris phinei'' Va ... Platydorididae
Discodorididae is a taxonomic family of sea slugs, specifically dorid nudibranchs, marine gastropod mollusks in the superfamily Doridoidea.Bouchet, P. (2011). Discodorididae. Accessed through: World Register of Marine Species at http://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=1761 on 2011-08-23 Species in this family belong to the cryptobranch dorid nudibranchs, i.e. they are able to retract their gills into a gill pocket (cryptobranch = hidden gills). Most are small and hard to identify. Most are thought to feed at night on sponges, while during the day they search for dark areas or remain hidden under rocks. One example of a discodoridid is the "Pacific sea lemon" or "speckled sea lemon", ''Peltodoris nobilis'', which occurs off the coast of British Columbia to Baja California from low-tide waters to a depth of about 200 m. Not only is this species yellow with a bumpy surface, but it also gives off a strong fruity citrus smell when handled, adding to its resemblan ... Genus
Genus ( plural genera ) is a taxonomic rank used in the biological classification of living and fossil organisms as well as viruses. In the hierarchy of biological classification, genus comes above species and below family. In binomial nomenclature, the genus name forms the first part of the binomial species name for each species within the genus. :E.g. '' Panthera leo'' (lion) and '' Panthera onca'' (jaguar) are two species within the genus ''Panthera''. ''Panthera'' is a genus within the family Felidae. The composition of a genus is determined by taxonomists. The standards for genus classification are not strictly codified, so different authorities often produce different classifications for genera. There are some general practices used, however, including the idea that a newly defined genus should fulfill these three criteria to be descriptively useful: # monophyly – all descendants of an ancestral taxon are grouped together (i.e. phylogenetic analysis should c ... Dorididae
Sea lemon is a loosely applied common name for a group of medium-sized to large shell-less colorful sea slugs or nudibranchs, specifically dorid nudibranchs in the taxonomic family Dorididae and other closely related families. These are marine gastropod mollusks. The Monterey sea lemon is '' Doris montereyensis'' and the mottled pale sea lemon is ''Diaulula lentiginosa''. The common name sea lemon probably comes from these animal's visual similarity to a lemon based on such qualities as the roughened skin, the oval form when seen from above, and the common but not inevitable orange to pale yellow coloration. Description These dorid nudibranchs can be large (up to 20 cm), rather flattened, and oval in shape when seen from above. They have two hornlike projections (rhinophores) on the head, and a rosette-like tuft of gills on the back of the animal. The mantle is sometimes sprinkled with black dots, and it is covered in small bumps, which are called tubercles. Life habit ... Alice Pruvot-Fol
Alice Pruvot-Fol (4 August 1873 – 28 March 1972) was a French opisthobranch malacologist. She was the author of many new species, mostly described on the basis of preserved animals. She described a new species (''Nembrotha rutilans'', Pruvot-Fol, 1931) on the basis of a painted illustration in a book by William Saville-Kent (1893) entitled ''The Great Barrier Reef of Australia''. She continued working and naming new species until late in her life. Even in 1962, when she was 89 years old, she named ''Phyllidia pulitzeri''. Species Some of the species described by her: *''Aldisa banyulensis'' Pruvot-Fol, 1951 *''Aplysiopsis formosa'' Pruvot-Fol *'' Atagema gibba'' Pruvot-Fol *'' Atagema rugosa'' Pruvot-Fol, 1951 *'' Chelidonura africana'' Pruvot-Fol *'' Chromodoris kuniei'' Pruvot-Fol, 1930 *'' Cumanotus cuenoti'' Pruvot-Fol, 1948 *'' Doriopsilla rarispinosa'' Pruvot-Fol, 1951 *''Elysia babai'' Pruvot-Fol, 1945 *''Elysia mercieri'' Pruvot-Fol, 1930 *''Facelina dubia'' Pruvot ... Mollusk
Mollusca is the second-largest phylum of invertebrate animals after the Arthropoda, the members of which are known as molluscs or mollusks (). Around 85,000 extant species of molluscs are recognized. The number of fossil species is estimated between 60,000 and 100,000 additional species. The proportion of undescribed species is very high. Many taxa remain poorly studied. Molluscs are the largest marine phylum, comprising about 23% of all the named marine organisms. Numerous molluscs also live in freshwater and terrestrial habitats. They are highly diverse, not just in size and anatomical structure, but also in behaviour and habitat. The phylum is typically divided into 7 or 8 taxonomic classes, of which two are entirely extinct. Cephalopod molluscs, such as squid, cuttlefish, and octopuses, are among the most neurologically advanced of all invertebrates—and either the giant squid or the colossal squid is the largest known invertebrate species.
