Baguirmi Department
Baguirmi () is a department of Chad, one of three in the Chari-Baguirmi Region. It takes its name from the kingdom of Baguirmi. Its capital is Massenya. Geography The surface of the department, which lies about above sea-level, is almost flat with a very slight inclination north to Lake Chad. It forms part of what seems to be the basin of an immense lake, of which Chad is the remnant. The soil is clay. Numerous tributaries of the river Chari River flow through the department, but much of the water is absorbed by swamps and sand-obstructed channels, and seasons of drought are recurrent. The southern part of the district is the most fertile. Under French colonial rule the capital was Chekna, on a tributary of the Chari. Fort Lamy (actually N'Djamena) at the confluence of the Logone and Chari, and Fort de Cointet on the middle Shari, were French outposts around which towns grew. Baguirmi Language
Bagirmi (also Baguirmi; autonym: ''tàrà ɓármà)'' is the language of the Bagirmi people of Chad belonging to the Central Sudanic family, which has been tenatively classified as part of the Nilo-Saharan superfamily. It was spoken by 44,761 people in 1993, mainly in the Chari-Baguirmi Region, as well as in Mokofi sub-prefecture of Guéra Region.Oxfam and Office National de Développement Rural (ONDR). 2016. Baguirmi People
The Bagirmi (also spelled "Baguirmi") or Barma are a Central African ethnic group who inhabit the Chari-Baguirmi region of Chad. They are one of Chad's major ethnic groups. Social structure Language The Bagirmi mostly speak the Bagirmi language as their native language, although some of them speak Fula or Chadian Arabic instead. Religion Their main religion is Folk Islam. Islam was introduced to the Bagirmi by the start of the 17th century, however it never fully replaced their traditional beliefs. Government Bagirmi society has a royal family and their king is known as ''mbang'', a tradition that dates back to the Sultanate of Bagirmi. Economy The Bagirmi mainly cultivate sorghum and millet and raise cattle, chickens, goats and sheep.
