' (May there be praise and glory and honour), 28/2a and 231, identical to the second movement of BWV Anh. 160, is a motet composed by Johann Sebastian Bach.Bach Digital Works , and It was composed some time in 1725. Text BWV 28/2a is an arrangement of the second movement of Bach's cantata ''Gottlob! nun geht das Jahr zu Ende'', BWV 28, with a different text, however taken from the same Lutheran hymn, that is Johann Gramann's "Nun lob, mein Seel, den Herren" (1530). Music The motet has SATB voice parts. In some printings of this motet, a basso continuo is added to support the bass part, doubling it exactly. The St. Thomas Church () is a Lutheran church in Leipzig, Germany, located at the western part of the inner city ring road in Leipzig's central district. Martin Luther preached in the church in 1539. It is associated with several well-known composers, especially Johann Sebastian Bach, who was its Thomaskantor (music director) from 1723 until his death in 1750. The church holds his remains. Although rebuilt over the centuries and damaged by Allied incendiary bombs in 1943, the church mainly retains the character of a late-Gothic hall church. Bach Digital (German: ), developed by the Bach Archive in Leipzig, is an online database which gives access to information on compositions by Johann Sebastian Bach and members of his family. Early manuscripts of such compositions are a major focus of the website, which provides access to high-resolution digitized versions of many of these. Scholarship on manuscripts and versions of compositions is summarized on separate pages, with references to scholarly sources and editions. The database portal has been online since 2010. Johann Gramann
Johann Gramann or Graumann (5 July 1487 – 29 April 1541), also known by his pen name Johannes Poliander, was a German pastor, theologian, teacher, humanist, reformer, and Lutheran leader. Life Gramann was born in Neustadt an der Aisch, Middle Franconia. He worked as rector of the Thomasschule in Leipzig. Poliander was Johann Eck's secretary at the 1519 Leipzig Debate, where he met Martin Luther and joined the Protestant Reformation. Poliander became pastor of Altstadt Church in 1525 in Königsberg (Kaliningrad), capital of the new Duchy of Prussia (a fief of the Crown of Poland), succeeding the fiery Johannes Amandus. The humanist was well-regarded by his peers, including the Catholic Johannes Dantiscus. He wrote secular and religious poetry in German and Latin. "" (Now praise, my soul, the Lord) is a Lutheran hymn written in German by the theologian and reformer Johann Gramann in 1525. It was published in 1540 and appears in 47 hymnals. A translation by Catherine Winkworth, "My Soul, now Praise thy Maker!", was published in 1863. History and text The hymn is a general song of praise, paraphrasing Psalm 103 in four stanzas of 12 lines each. It is supposed to have been written in 1525 "at the request of the Margrave Albrecht, as a version of his favourite Psalm". The hymn was published in Nürnberg as a broadsheet around 1540, and in Augsburg in the hymnal ''Concentus novi'' by Hans Kugelmann in 1540, with a hymn tune, Zahn No. 8244, derived from the secular song "Weiß mir ein Blümlein blaue".
