BellSouth
BellSouth, LLC (stylized as ''BELLSOUTH'' and formerly known as BellSouth Corporation) was an American telecommunications holding company based in Atlanta, Georgia. BellSouth was one of the seven original Regional Bell Operating Companies after the U.S. Department of Justice forced the American Telephone & Telegraph Company to divest itself of its regional telephone companies on January 1, 1984. In a merger announced on March 5, 2006, and executed on December 29, 2006, AT&T Inc. (originally SBC Communications) acquired BellSouth for approximately $86 billion (1.325 shares of AT&T for each share of BellSouth). The merger also consolidated ownership of Cingular Wireless and Yellowpages.com, both of which were joint ventures between BellSouth and AT&T. With the merger completed, wireless services previously offered by Cingular Wireless were then offered under the AT&T name, and BellSouth Telecommunications (a subsidiary of a Bell Operating Company) began doing business as AT ...

Bare Lymphocyte Syndrome
Bare lymphocyte syndrome is a condition caused by mutations in certain genes of the major histocompatibility complex or involved with the processing and presentation of MHC molecules. It is a form of severe combined immunodeficiency. Presentation Bare lymphocyte syndrome, type II (BLS II) is a rare recessive genetic condition in which a group of genes called the major histocompatibility complex class II (MHC class II) are not expressed. In BLS II the immune system is severely compromised and cannot effectively fight infection due to an inability for antigen presenting cells to activate CD4⁺ t-cells as no TCR recognition of MHC II/peptide complexes can occur. Clinically, this is similar to severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID), in which lymphocyte precursor cells are improperly formed. Absolute T-cell count is also reduced, due to impaired development with the absence of MHC II. BLS I is characterised by a lack of MHC I molecules. Symptoms can include recurrent bacterial infect ...

BLS Digital Signature
A BLS digital signature, also known as Boneh–Lynn–Shacham (BLS), is a cryptographic signature scheme which allows a user to verify that a signer is ''authentic''. The scheme uses a bilinear pairing e: G_1\times G_2\to G_T, where G_1, G_2, and G_T are elliptic curve groups of prime order q, and a hash function H from the message space into G_1. Signature are elements of G_1, public keys are elements of G_2, and the secret key is an integer in ,q-1/math>. Working in an elliptic curve group provides some defense against index calculus attacks (with the caveat that such attacks are still possible in the target group G_T of the pairing), allowing shorter signatures than FDH signatures for a similar level of security. Signatures produced by the BLS signature scheme are often referred to as ''short signatures'', ''BLS short signatures'', or simply ''BLS signatures''. The signature scheme is provably secure (the scheme is existentially unforgeable under adaptive chose ...

Brillouin Scattering
In electromagnetism, Brillouin scattering (also known as Brillouin light scattering or BLS), named after Léon Brillouin, refers to the interaction of light with the material waves in a medium (e.g. electrostriction and magnetostriction). It is mediated by the refractive index dependence on the material properties of the medium; as described in optics, the ''index of refraction'' of a transparent material changes under deformation (compression-distension or shear-skewing). The result of the interaction between the light-wave and the carrier-deformation wave is that a fraction of the transmitted light-wave changes its momentum (thus its frequency and energy) in preferential directions, as if by diffraction caused by an oscillating 3-dimensional diffraction grating. If the medium is a solid crystal, a macromolecular chain condensate or a viscous liquid or gas, then the low frequency atomic-chain-deformation waves within the transmitting medium (not the transmitted electro-magneti ...

Blind Loop Syndrome
Blind loop syndrome, also known as stagnant loop syndrome, is a state that occurs when the normal bacterial flora of the small intestine proliferates to numbers that cause significant derangement to the normal physiological processes of digestion and absorption. In some cases of blind loop syndrome, overgrowth of pathogenic non-commensal bacteria has also been noted. It has long been understood that from birth, and throughout life, large amounts of bacteria reside symbiotically within animal gastrointestinal tracts such as the human gastrointestinal tract. The understanding of this gut flora has even led to novel treatments for bowel irregularity that utilize so called "probiotics" or good bacteria that aid in normal digestion. The problem of blind loop syndrome arises when the bacterial colonies residing in the upper gastrointestinal tract begin to grow out of control or are altered in their makeup thereby creating a burden on the normal physiological processes occurring in the sm ...

Basic Life Support
Basic life support (BLS) is a level of medical care which is used for patients with life-threatening condition of cardiac arrest until they can be given full medical care by advanced life support providers (paramedics, nurses, physicians or any trained general personnel). It can be provided by trained medical personnel, such as emergency medical technicians, qualified bystanders and anybody who is trained for providing BLS and/or ACLS. Background The International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) was formed in 1992 to coordinate the efforts of resuscitation worldwide. The ILCOR representatives come from various countries such as the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and from the European, Asian, and African continents. In 2000, the committee published the first resuscitation guideline. In 2005, the committee published International Consensus on Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC) Science with Treatment Recommendatio ...

Bacterial Leaf Scorch
Bacterial leaf scorch (commonly abbreviated BLS, also called bacterial leaf spot) is a disease state affecting many crops, caused mainly by the xylem-plugging bacterium ''Xylella fastidiosa''. It can be mistaken for ordinary ''leaf scorch'' caused by cultural practices such as over-fertilization. Hosts BLS can be found on a wide variety of hosts, ranging from ornamental trees (elm, maple, oak) and shrubs, to crop species including blueberry and almond. * ''Xylella fastidiosa'' is known to cause BLS in a very wide range of plants. Each of its subspecies has have a different host range. ** The ''multiplex'' subspecies causes BLS of pecans. * Bacterial spot of peppers and tomatoes is caused by the bacteria Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria, ''Xanthomonas campestris'' pv. ''vesicatoria'', which has since been divided into four pathovars in three species. * Bacterial spot of peaches is caused by the bacteria Xanthomonas pruni, ''Xanthomonas arboricola'' pv. ''pruni''. It also ...
