Australian Sports Party
The Australian Sports Party was a registered federal political party of Australia formed in 2013 and officially deregistered in August 2015. The party aimed "for every Australian to be involved in sport and recreation to assist in living a healthy and enjoyable lifestyle in a strong community." It contested the Senate election of 2013 and succeeded in having Wayne Dropulich elected as a senator for Western Australia before that state's Senate count was declared void. The party failed to win a seat at the 2014 Western Australian Senate election held on 5 April 2014. Wayne Dropulich (born 1970 or 1971) is an Australian former politician who was elected to the Senate as a member of the Australian Sports Party in the final count of the 2013 federal election prior to the Western Australian Senate count being declared void by the Court of Disputed Returns. Dropulich nominated for the special Senate election for Western Australia held on 5 April 2014, but failed to win a seat. Background Dropulich, a Perth-based civil engineer and mining project manager who formerly worked at Rio Tinto, conceived the idea to form his own political party with the help of friends in early 2013. The Minor Party Alliance (MPA), also known simply as the Alliance, is an alliance of small Australian political parties, currently active in Victorian state politics. It was created by Glenn Druery's "Independent Liaison" business, which assists in organising preference meetings and negotiating preference flows between minor parties (also referred to as micro-parties). The aim of the MPA is the election of its candidates to Australian upper houses, based upon the accumulation of their primary votes and the registered "above-the-line" (or "group voting ticket") party preferences to reach an electoral quota. The MPA effectively aims to "game" the electoral system, an act it believes to be justified, based upon their perception that the Australian electoral system is unfair and heavily biased against minor parties.
