Astures
The Astures or Asturs, also named Astyrs, were the Hispano-Celtic inhabitants of the northwest area of Hispania that now comprises almost the entire modern autonomous community of the Principality of Asturias, the modern province of León, and the northern part of the modern province of Zamora (all in Spain), and eastern Trás os Montes in Portugal. They were a horse-riding highland cattle-raising people who lived in circular huts of stone drywall construction. The Albiones were a major tribe from western Asturias. Isidore of Seville gave an etymology as coming from a ''river Astura'', identified by David Magie as the Órbigo River in the plain of León, and by others as the modern Esla River. Location The Asturian homeland encompassed the modern autonomous community of Asturias and the León, eastern Lugo, Orense, and northern Zamora provinces, along with the northeastern tip of the Portuguese region of Trás-os-Montes. ''Astur'' is a genus containing hawks, goshawks and sparrowhawks in the family Accipitridae. The species were formerly placed in the genus ''Accipiter''. Taxonomy The genus ''Astur'' was introduced in 1799 by the French naturalist Bernard Germain de Lacépède. The type species was later designated by the Irish zoologist Nicholas Vigors as ''Falco palumbarius'' Linnaeus, 1758, now considered as a junior synonym of ''Falco gentilis'' Linnaeus, 1758, the Eurasian goshawk. The name is from Latin ''astur'', ''asturis'' meaning "hawk". Species now placed in this genus were formerly assigned to the genus ''Accipiter''. Molecular phylogenetic studies found that ''Accipiter'' was polyphyletic and in the subsequent rearrangement to create monophyletic In biological cladistics for the classification of organisms, monophyly is the condition of a taxonomic grouping being a clade – that is, a grouping of organisms which meets these criteria: # the grouping contains its own most ... Accipiter
''Accipiter'' () is a genus of birds of prey in the family Accipitridae. Some species are called sparrowhawks, but there are many sparrowhawks in other genera such as '' Tachyspiza''. These birds are slender with short, broad, rounded wings and a long tail which helps them maneuver in flight. They have long legs and long, sharp talons used to kill their prey, and a sharp, hooked bill used in feeding. Females tend to be larger than males. They often ambush their prey, mainly small birds and mammals, capturing them after a short chase. The typical flight pattern is a series of flaps followed by a short glide. They are commonly found in wooded or shrubby areas. The genus ''Accipiter'' was introduced by the French zoologist Mathurin Jacques Brisson in 1760. The type species is the Eurasian sparrowhawk (''Accipiter nisus''). The name is Latin for "hawk", from ''accipere'', "to grasp".
