Asgard (archaea)
Promethearchaeati (Synonym (taxonomy), syn. "Asgard") is a Kingdom (biology), kingdom belonging to the Domain (biology), domain Archaea that contain Eukaryote, eukaryotic signature proteins. It appears that the eukaryotes, the Domain (biology), domain that contains the animals, plants, Fungus, fungi and Protist, protists, Eukaryogenesis, emerged within the Promethearchaeati, in a branch containing the "''Candidatus'' Heimdallarchaeota". This supports the two-domain system of classification over the three-domain system. The kingdom contains one phylum Promethearchaeota, and it contains one valid Class (biology), class Promethearchaeia. After including the kingdom category into International Code of Nomenclature of Prokaryotes, ICNP, the only validly published name of this group is kingdom Promethearchaeati. List of Prokaryotic names with Standing in Nomenclature (LPSN) is an online database that maintains information on the naming and taxonomy of prokaryotes, following the taxonomy requirements and rulings of the International Code of Nomenclature of Prokaryotes. The database was curated from 1997 to June 2013 by Jean P. Euzéby. From July 2013 to January 2020, LPSN was curated by Aidan C. Parte. In February 2020, a new version of LPSN was published as a service of the Leibniz Institute DSMZ, thereby also integrating the Prokaryotic Nomenclature Up-to-date service and since 2022 LPSN is interconnected with the Type (Strain) Genome Server (TYGS), DSMZ's high-throughput platform for accurate genome-based taxonomy. Lokiarchaeota
Promethearchaeota is the sole phylum of the kingdom Promethearchaeati, the kingdom from which the eukaryotes emerged. The phylum has one valid class: Promethearchaeia. The phylum includes all members of the group previously named Deep Sea Archaeal Group, also known as Marine Benthic Group B. A phylogenetic analysis disclosed a monophyletic grouping of the Promethearchaeota with the eukaryotes. The analysis revealed several genes with cell membrane-related functions. The presence of such genes support the hypothesis of an archaeal host for the emergence of the eukaryotes; the eocyte-like scenarios. Promethearchaeota was introduced in 2015 after the identification of a candidate genome in a metagenomic analysis of a mid-oceanic sediment sample. They are commonly found near volcanically active places, areas where tectonic plates are moving apart at mid-ocean ridges, ocean basins, and hotspots. Loki's Castle is a field of five active hydrothermal vents in the Atlantic, mid-Atlantic Ocean, located at 73rd parallel north, 73 degrees north on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge between Iceland and Svalbard at a depth of . When they were discovered in mid-July 2008, they were the most northerly black smoker vents known to science. They are of geological interest as they occur in a relatively stable region of the Earth's crust with diminished tectonic forces and consequently fewer hydrothermal vents.
