Armengaud-Lemale Gas Turbine
The Armengaud-Lemale gas turbine was an early experimental turbine engine built by the ''Société Anonyme des Turbomoteurs'' at their facility in Saint-Denis, Paris during 1906. The machine is named after the society's founders, Rene Armengaud and Charles Lemale. The 1906 Armengaud-Lemale gas turbine could sustain its own air compression but was too inefficient to produce useful work. Although it was unsuccessful as a gas turbine, the combustion chamber design from the 1906 machine was later used successfully in torpedo engines. Design and development In 1901, Charles Lemale obtained a patent for a gas turbine and in 1903 he founded the ''Société Anonyme des Turbomoteurs'' with Rene Armengaud. Auguste Rateau
Auguste Rateau (; 13 October 1863 – 13 January 1930) was an engineer and industrialist born in Royan, France, specializing in turbines. Biography After studies, first at the École Polytechnique and then at the École des Mines de Paris, he began his career as a teacher at the École des Mines de Saint-Étienne from 1888 to 1897. He then embarked on an industrial career exploiting turbines. He manufactured fans for mines, blowers for steel mills, water pumps, and steam turbines for ships. To this end, he created a design office in Paris and, in 1903, the ''Société pour l’exploitation des appareils Rateau'', which moved in 1917 to La Courneuve where he opened a factory two years later. A compressor is a mechanical device that increases the pressure of a gas by reducing its volume. An air compressor is a specific type of gas compressor. Many compressors can be staged, that is, the gas is compressed several times in steps or stages, to increase discharge pressure. Often, the second stage is physically smaller than the primary stage, to accommodate the already compressed gas without reducing its pressure. Each stage further compresses the gas and increases its pressure and also temperature (if inter cooling between stages is not used). Neuchâtel Gas Turbine
The Neuchâtel gas turbine is the world's first electric power-generating gas turbine to go into commercial operation. It was designed and constructed by Brown, Boveri & Cie and installed in 1939 at the municipal power station in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. The gas turbine was in service as a standby unit from 1940 until its retirement in 2002. In recognition of its historical significance, the turbine was awarded "mechanical landmark" status by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) in 1988.
