Ardy Wiranata
Ardy Bernardus Wiranata (born 10 February 1970) is an Indonesian-born Canadian former badminton player who rated among the top singles players in the world (several of whom were fellow Indonesians) during most of the 1990s. Career Quick, supple, and powerful, he won numerous international events and arguably had the best overall record of any player in the first half of the decade. Born in Jakarta, Wiranata trained at the PB Djarum. His achievements began when won the invitation World Junior Championships in 1987 in the boys' singles and mixed doubles event partnered with Susi Susanti. Afterwards, he managed to competing in the senior tournament, by become the runner-up at the 1989 IBF World Championships. Wiranata earned the silver medal in singles at the 1992 Summer Olympics, losing the final to fellow countryman Alan Budikusuma. Badminton At The Asian Games
Badminton has been one of the regular Asian Games sports since 1962 in Jakarta, Indonesia. History Badminton made its debut in the Asian Games as a demonstration sport at the 1958 Asian Games in Tokyo, Japan, and became a regular competitive sport in 1962. In the 1962 Games, six events were held, with singles, doubles and team event for both men and women. The mixed doubles event was added in 1966 Asian Games. There was a playoff between the two semifinal losers to determine the sole winner of the bronze medal in 1962; but since 1966, two bronze medals per event are awarded in each event (except in 1974). Competition Asian Games badminton consists of a single-elimination tournament. Each match is played to the best of three games, each game is of 21 points. The 1990 Thomas & Uber Cup was the 16th tournament of the Thomas Cup, and the 13th tournament of the Uber Cup, which are the major international team competitions in world badminton. The 1988 Thomas Cup & Uber Cup was the 15th tournament of Thomas Cup and the 12th tournament of Uber Cup, the most important badminton team competitions in the world. The tournament was held from 23 May to 4 June 1988 at Stadium Negara in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. China won its third title in the Thomas Cup and in the Uber Cup, after beating in the final round Malaysia and Korea, respectively. Host selection In January 1987, Malaysia submitted their bid to host the Thomas and Uber Cup to the IBF following their success of hosting the World Badminton Grand Prix Finals in December 1986. The 1996 Thomas & Uber Cup was the 19th tournament of the Thomas Cup, and the 16th tournament of the Uber Cup, which are the major international team competitions in world badminton. The 1996 Thomas and Uber Cup press conference was held in Bank Rakyat Indonesia's building at the Sentra BRI Complex in Sudirman, Central Jakarta.
