André Dang Van Nha
André Dang Van Nha (originally ''Đặng Văn Nha''; born Voh, New Caledonia, 27 July 1936) is a New Caledonian mining magnate, of Vietnamese origin and France, French/Australian/Vietnamese citizenship. He is best known for brokering a series of remarkable mining deals that also supported the Kanak people, Kanak cause for independence from France. Background André Dang was born in poverty to Nguyễn Thị Bình, a Vietnamese woman who had left behind her three children in Phhuc Am in French Indochina, and was recruited as an indentured labourer by a mining company in 1935 to work on New Caledonia's nickel mines in and around the Koniambo mine, Koniambo complex, close to the town of Voh in the country's north. Smelter
Smelting is a process of applying heat and a chemical reducing agent to an ore to extract a desired base metal product. It is a form of extractive metallurgy that is used to obtain many metals such as iron, copper, silver, tin, lead and zinc. Smelting uses heat and a chemical reducing agent to decompose the ore, driving off other elements as gases or slag and leaving the metal behind. The reducing agent is commonly a fossil-fuel source of carbon, such as carbon monoxide from incomplete combustion of coke—or, in earlier times, of charcoal. Koniambo Nickel SAS
The Koniambo mine is a large open pit mine of the laterite variety in the north of New Caledonia in the North Province. It is closest to the small town of Voh, on the west coast of the island. Nickel is found in saprolite ore on the Koniambo Massif, and taken by conveyor to a new smelter on the coast. Koniambo has one of the largest nickel reserves in New Caledonia, with around 151 million tonnes of ore grading at 2.58% nickel, which was in 2014 reputed to be the highest-grade undeveloped property in the world. Each 62.5 million tonnes of ore contains 4 million tonnes of nickel metal. The final output of the mine is ferronickel, approximately 176,000t per annum of which is produced in shot form.
