Ana Eva Hei
Ana Eva Hei, also Uka ʻa Hei ʻa ʻArero, or Reina Eva (Queen Eva) (c.1849 – c.1949), was the consort of the penultimate ruler of Easter Island, Rapa Nui, Atamu Tekena. She was one of the last surviving Rapa Nui people to have been Tattoo, tattooed using traditional practices. Along with Viriamo, Ana Eva Hei was among the last surviving women from Rapa Nui to receive Rapa Nui tattooing, traditional facial tattoos. Her tattoos were described by Alfred Métraux, who undertook a research expedition to her home from 1934 to 1935. He stated that her tattoos included: "two parallel stripes crossing her forehead from one ear to the other and the inner edge of the ear tattooed ... The design on her lower jaw is composed of a triangular figure which meets an oval design, together forming an open angle. Her hands are covered with thin blue lines reminiscent of mittens." Atamu Tekena
Atamu Tekena or Atamu te Kena, full name Atamu Maurata Te Kena ʻAo Tahi (c. 1850 – August 1892) was the penultimate ‘ Ariki or King of Rapa Nui (i.e. Easter Island) from 1883 until his death. In 1888, he signed a treaty of annexation ceding Easter Island to Chile in a ceremony officiated by Captain Policarpo Toro. His name is translated as "Adam the Gannet". Life and reign He was born around 1850 as an extended member of the Miru clan, traditionally associated with the native kingship (''ariki mau''). Due to Peruvian slave raiding and the decimation of the native Rapa Nui population by introduced diseases, the population of Easter Island had dropped to 110 individuals by 1877. Tattoo
A tattoo is a form of body modification made by inserting tattoo ink, dyes, or pigments, either indelible or temporary, into the dermis layer of the skin to form a design. Rapa Nui Tattooing
As in other Polynesian islands, Rapa Nui tattooing had a fundamentally spiritual connotation. (Rapa Nui, Easter Island.) In some cases the Tattoo, tattoos were considered a receptor for divine strength or mana. They were manifestations of the Rapa Nui culture. Priests, warriors and chiefs had more tattoos than the rest of the population, as a symbol of their hierarchy. Both men and women were tattooed to represent their social class. Process The tattooing process was performed with bone needles and combs called or made out of bird or fish bones. The ink was made out of natural products, primarily from the burning of Ti leaves (''Cordyline terminalis'') and sugar cane. The other end has two grooves so that a rod can be attached to the end, which probably helps the artist maneuver the needles during the tattoo process. Alfred Métraux
Alfred Métraux (; 5 November 1902 – 12 April 1963) was a Swiss and Argentine anthropologist, ethnologist and human rights leader. Early life Born in Lausanne, Switzerland, Métraux spent much of his childhood in Argentina where his father was a well-known surgeon resident in Mendoza. His mother was a Georgian from Tbilisi. He received his secondary and university education in Europe, at the Classical Gymnasium of Lausanne, the École nationale des chartes in Paris, the École nationale des langues Orientales (Diplome, 1925). The École pratique des hautes études (Diplôme, 1927) and the Sorbonne (Docteur ès lettres, 1928). Viriamo
Victoria Veriamo a Huki a Parapara, also known as Viriamo () was one of the last surviving indigenous women of Easter Island to have been tattooed using traditional practices, along with Ana Eva Hei. She was a cultural informant who shared her knowledge of indigenous Rapa Nui culture with European visitors, as well as with her son Juan Tepano, who in turn also functioned as a cultural informant. Tattoos Viriamo's face and body may have been tattooed by the catechist Tomanika Vaka Tuku One.
