Amos Coggswell
Amos Coggswell (September 29, 1825 in Boscawen, New Hampshire – November 15, 1892 in Steele County, Minnesota) was a Minnesota politician, a member of both the Republican and Democratic parties, and a former Speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives. Coggswell served as a delegate to the Republican State Constitutional Convention in 1857. He was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 1858, and became the second house speaker in 1859. In 1867, he ran unsuccessfully for Minnesota Secretary of State as a Democrat. George Bradley (Minnesota Politician)
George Bradley (1833 – 1879) was an American politician and a former member of the Minnesota House of Representatives. He represented District 7, which at that time included portions of Scott County just southwest of the Twin Cities. Career Bradley was elected to the position of speaker pro tem of the Minnesota House of Representatives on December 22, 1857, when then-Speaker John S. Watrous took leave to attend to personal business. When, due to Watrous' prolonged absence, the speaker's chair was declared vacant on March 12, 1858, Bradley was elected speaker in his own right. In 1860 he was appointed receiver of the General Land Office in St. Paul. Abraham Lincoln's call for volunteers prompted him to volunteer as a major in the 7th Minnesota Infantry Regiment. Minnesota Secretary Of State
The secretary of state of Minnesota is a constitutional officer in the executive branch of government of the U.S. State of Minnesota. Twenty-two individuals have held the office of secretary of state since statehood. The incumbent is Steve Simon, a DFLer. Election and term of office The secretary of state is elected by the people on Election Day in November, and takes office on the first Monday of the next January. There is no limit to the number of terms a secretary of state may hold. To be elected secretary of state, a person must be qualified voter, permanently resident in the state of Minnesota at least 30 days prior to the election, and at least 21 years of age. The Constitution of the State of Minnesota was initially approved by the residents of Minnesota Territory in a special election held on October 13, 1857, and was ratified by the United States Senate on May 11, 1858, marking the admittance of Minnesota to the Union.
