Aman Ravindra Singh
Aman Ravindra Singh is a Fijian politician of Indian descent. He is currently the Assistant Secretary of the Fiji Labour Party and an eminent human rights and constitutional lawyer in Fiji. The Fiji Labour Party National Council appointed Singh as their parliamentary leader in preparation for general elections to be taking place in 2019. The Party leader, Mahendra Chaudhary also announced that if Labour Party wins the general elections in 2019, Singh will become the Prime Minister. Fiji Labour Party
The Fiji Labour Party (FLP; fj, Ilawalawa Cakacaka ni Viti), also known as Fiji Labour, is a political party in Fiji. Most of its support is from the Indo-Fijian community, although it is officially multiracial and its first leader was an indigenous Fijian, Dr. Timoci Bavadra. The party has been elected to power twice, with Timoci Bavadra and Mahendra Chaudhry becoming prime minister in 1987 and 1999 respectively. On both occasions, the resulting government was rapidly overthrown by a coup. Mahendra Chaudhry
Mahendra Pal Chaudhry ( hif, महेन्द्र पाल चौधरी; born 9 February 1942) is a Fijian politician and the leader of the Fiji Labour Party. Following a historic election in which he defeated the long-time former leader, Sitiveni Rabuka, the former trade union leader became Fiji's first Indo-Fijian Prime Minister on 19 May 1999, but exactly one year later, on 19 May 2000 he and most of his Cabinet were taken hostage by coup leader George Speight, in the Fiji coup of 2000. Unable to exercise his duties, he and his ministers were sacked by President Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara on 27 May; Mara intended to assume emergency powers himself but was himself deposed by the military leader, Commodore Frank Bainimarama. People's Democratic Party (Fiji)
The People's Democratic Party was a political party in Fiji. The party was proposed in January 2013 by the Fiji Trades Union Congress as a vehicle to promote the interests of workers and unions. Shortly afterwards, the Fijian regime promulgated new regulations governing the registration of political parties, which included a ban on participation by union officials. The party applied for registration in April 2013. Registration was approved on 29 May 2013. In May 2014 former trade union leader Felix Anthony was elected leader of the party, with lawyer and prominent regime critic Aman Ravindra Singh as Secretary General and Lynda Tabuya as party president. Anthony stepped down as leader following the PDP's failure to win any seats in the 2014 election, and was replaced by Adi Sivia Qoro, while Ravindra-Singh defected to the FLP in 2017. Felix Anthony
Felix M. Anthony is a Fiji Indian trade unionist and politician. During the 2000 coup, he was illegally detained by members of the Taukei Movement, an ethnic Fijian extremist organisation. He was appointed to the Senate in 2002 as one of eight nominees of the Leader of the Opposition. Anthony is National Secretary of the Fiji Trades Union Congress (FTUC). He was reelected as General Secretary of the Fiji Sugar and General Workers Union on 11 March 2006. In the parliamentary election held on 6–13 May 2006, Anthony was elected to the House of Representatives seat, representing the Vuda Open Constituency for the Fiji Labour Party (FLP). Adi Sivia Qoro is a former Fijian politician who served as a member of the House of Representatives for a short time in 2006. A member of the Fiji Labour Party, she represented the constituency of Yasawa Nawaka. In 2006 she served as the Minister for Commerce and the Minister for Industry in the multiparty cabinet of Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase. Fijians ( fj, iTaukei, lit=Owners (of the land)) are a nation and ethnic group native to Fiji, who speak Fijian and share a common history and culture. Josaia Voreqe "Frank" Bainimarama (Fijian: ʃoˈsɛia βoˈreŋɡe mbɛiniˈmarama born 27 April 1954) is a Fijian politician and former naval officer who served as the prime minister of Fiji from 2007 until 2022. A member of the FijiFirst party, which he founded in 2014, he began his career as an officer in the Fijian navy and commander of the Fijian military. He has been serving as the opposition leader since 24 December 2022. Bainimarama attended Marist Brothers High School, the Asian Institute of Technology and Dalhousie University. The High Court of Fiji is one of three courts that was established by Chapter 9 of the 1997 Constitution of Fiji — the others being the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court. The Constitution empowered Parliament to create other courts; these were to be subordinate to the High Court, which was authorized to oversee all proceedings of such courts.
