Sivia Qoro
Adi Sivia Qoro is a former Fijian politician who served as a member of the House of Representatives for a short time in 2006. A member of the Fiji Labour Party, she represented the constituency of Yasawa Nawaka. In 2006 she served as the Minister for Commerce and the Minister for Industry in the multiparty cabinet of Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase. In the 2014 elections (the first since the military coup of 2006), Qoro was a candidate for the People's Democratic Party (PDP). People's Democratic Party (Fiji)
The People's Democratic Party was a political party in Fiji. The party was proposed in January 2013 by the Fiji Trades Union Congress as a vehicle to promote the interests of workers and unions. Shortly afterwards, the Fijian regime promulgated new regulations governing the registration of political parties, which included a ban on participation by union officials. The party applied for registration in April 2013. Registration was approved on 29 May 2013. In May 2014 former trade union leader Felix Anthony was elected leader of the party, with lawyer and prominent regime critic Aman Ravindra Singh as Secretary General and Lynda Tabuya as party president. Anthony stepped down as leader following the PDP's failure to win any seats in the 2014 election, and was replaced by Adi Sivia Qoro, while Ravindra-Singh defected to the FLP in 2017. Fijians ( fj, iTaukei, lit=Owners (of the land)) are a nation and ethnic group native to Fiji, who speak Fijian and share a common history and culture. Fijians, or ''iTaukei'', are the major indigenous people of the Fiji Islands, and live in an area informally called Melanesia. Indigenous Fijians are believed to have arrived in Fiji from western Melanesia approximately 3,500 years ago, though the exact origins of the Fijian people are unknown. Felix Anthony
Felix M. Anthony is a Fiji Indian trade unionist and politician. During the 2000 coup, he was illegally detained by members of the Taukei Movement, an ethnic Fijian extremist organisation. He was appointed to the Senate in 2002 as one of eight nominees of the Leader of the Opposition. Anthony is National Secretary of the Fiji Trades Union Congress (FTUC). He was reelected as General Secretary of the Fiji Sugar and General Workers Union on 11 March 2006. In the parliamentary election held on 6–13 May 2006, Anthony was elected to the House of Representatives seat, representing the Vuda Open Constituency for the Fiji Labour Party (FLP). 2006 Fijian Coup D'état
The Fijian coup d'état of December 2006 was a coup d'état carried out by Commodore Frank Bainimarama, Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, against the government of President Josefa Iloilo. Iloilo was removed as president, but he was later reinstated by Bainimarama on 4 January 2007. The coup occurred as a continuation of the pressure which had been building since the military unrest of the 2000 Fijian coup d'état and 2005–06 Fijian political crisis. Fiji had seen four definitive coups in the past two decades. At the heart of the previous three of these lay the tensions between the ethnic Fijians and Indian Fijians. Laisenia Qarase
Laisenia Qarase (pronounced ; 4 February 1941 – 21 April 2020) was a Fijian politician. He served as the sixth Prime Minister of Fiji from 2000 to 2006. After the military quashed the coup that led to the removal of Mahendra Chaudhry, Qarase joined the Interim Military Government as a financial adviser on 9 June 2000, until his appointment as Prime Minister on 4 July. He won two parliamentary elections, but a military coup removed him from power on 5 December 2006. He was later imprisoned on corruption charges brought by the military-backed regime. A native of Vanua Balavu Island in the Lau archipelago, he was one of many Lauans to have held top leadership positions in Fiji.
