Chelsea are an English punk rock band which formed in 1976. Three of the four original band members went on to found Generation X. More than two decades after its release, the band's debut single, "Right to Work", was included in the '' Mojo'' list of the best punk rock singles of all time. History Formation (1976) The original line-up of the band was assembled in late 1976 by John Krivine and Steph Raynor, the owners of Acme Attractions, a fashion boutique shop in King's Road in Chelsea, London, comprising vocalist Gene October, guitarist William Broad (later and better known as Billy Idol), bassist Tony James and drummer John Towe; James and Towe had previously been in London SS. Raynor went on to establish the 'Boy' fashion label that became an icon of post punk British youth culture. Alternative TV (sometimes known as ATV) are an English band formed in London in 1977. Author Steve Taylor writes: "Alternative TV pioneered reggae rhythms in punk and then moved on to redefine the musical rules". History Alternative TV were formed by Mark Perry, the founding editor of '' Sniffin' Glue'', a punk fanzine, with Alex Fergusson. The name is a play on the name of Associated Television, a British broadcaster also known as ATV. Early rehearsals took place at Throbbing Gristle's Industrial Records studio with Genesis P-Orridge on drums (recordings from this period appeared, long afterwards, on the ''Industrial Sessions'' CD). The band's first live appearance was in Nottingham supporting The Adverts. The band's debut on record was "Love Lies Limp", a free flexi disc issued with the final edition of Perry's ''Sniffin' Glue'' fanzine. Brian James (guitarist)
Brian James (born Brian Robertson, 18 February 1955) is an English punk rock guitarist, who is best known for being a founding member of The Damned as well as of The Lords of the New Church. Biography He began his musical career playing in several proto-punk bands including London SS and The Subterraneans, in addition to glam rock band Bastard. James moved on to The Damned, writing almost all the material on their first two albums ('' Damned Damned Damned'' and '' Music for Pleasure'') before leaving at the end of 1977. In the following years James formed the short-lived Tanz Der Youth together with Andy Colqhoun on bass, Alan Powell on drums and Tony Moore on keyboards. They toured with Black Sabbath and released the single "I'm Sorry, I'm Sorry" / "Delay" in 1978. James then played in Iggy Pop's solo touring band (1979) and recorded his first two solo singles, "Ain't That a Shame" (1979) and "Why? Why? Why?" (1982), both with Stewart Copeland on drums. James Stevenson (musician)
James Stevenson (born 12 October 1958) is an English punk/alternative rock guitarist, at one time a member of the Alarm, Gene Loves Jezebel, Gen X, the Cult, Holy Holy, the International Swingers and Chelsea. Music career Stevenson started his career with the London-based punk band Chelsea in 1977, while he was still at school studying for A Level exams. He toured with Gen X as its lead guitarist in 1980. After Gen X broke up in early 1981 he worked with Kim Wilde, contributing to her first album, ''Kim Wilde'', and second album, ''Select'', and performing in all of Wilde's early videos including " Kids in America". Stevenson then formed Hot Club with former Sex Pistols bassist Glen Matlock. They released two singles on RAK Records. Mark Perry is a British writer and musician, and former fanzine publisher. Perry was a bank clerk when, inspired by The Ramones, he founded the punk fanzine '' Sniffin' Glue (And Other Rock 'n' Roll Habits)'' in 1976. Alex Fergusson (born 16 December 1952) is a Scottish guitarist / record producer. Fergusson played in the Nobodies, with Sandy Robertson (later a rock journalist of note), before forming the punk rock, punk band Alternative TV with Mark Perry (musician), Mark Perry in 1977, and a few years later (in 1981) joined Psychic TV.Thompson, DaveAlternative TV Biography, Allmusic. The sky is an unobstructed view upward from the surface of the Earth. It includes the atmosphere and outer space. Gene October
Gene October is a British singer and songwriter who was a formative figure in London's punk rock movement in the late 1970s. Music career In 1976, October was involved in the creation of The Roxy when he suggested to the management of Chaguaramas, a central London nightclub, that they convert it into a centre for the new punk rock scene to coalesce. Later, he briefly managed a club named Revolution No.9 and was employed as an A&R man for Miles Copeland III's IRS Records. October was the singer/frontman of the original London band Chelsea, which formed in late 1976, also featuring William Broad on guitar and Tony James on bass. The band's repertoire at this time consisted primarily of cover versions of 1960s songs by the Beatles and Rolling Stones, but they broke up after only a few weeks and a handful of live performances due to a clash of personalities. The Seeds
The Seeds were an American psychedelic garage rock band formed in Los Angeles, California in 1965, best known for their highest charting single "Pushin' Too Hard". The band's classic line-up featured frontman Sky Saxon, guitarist Jan Savage (born Buck Jan Reeder), keyboardist Daryl Hooper and drummer Rick Andridge. In 1968, the band changed their name to ''Sky Saxon and the Seeds'', with Savage and Andridge departing the band. They went on to release a handful of additional singles, with Hooper also departing at some point before splitting up in circa 1972. In 1989, the original lineup of the band reformed for a handful of live dates in the US. In 2003, Saxon reformed the Seeds with original guitarist Jan Savage (who departed part way through a European tour the same year due to ill health).
