Alken-Maes is a Belgium, Belgian brewery created out of the 1988 merger of two small breweries, Maes located at Waarloos, Kontich-Waarloos and Cristal-Alken located at Alken, Belgium, Alken. It was bought by Scottish & Newcastle in 2000, who were taken over by Scottish & Newcastle#Acquisition by Carlsberg/Heineken consortium, Carlsberg and Heineken in 2007. Both had specialized in pilsner, pils (Maes was producing Maes pils and Alken Cristal Alken, Cristal pils) until Maes purchased the Union brewery (based in Jumet) in 1978, which produced Grimbergen (beer), Grimbergen beer among others. Grimbergen (beer)
Grimbergen is the brand name of a variety of Belgian abbey beers. Originally made by Norbertine monks in the Belgian town of Grimbergen, it is now brewed by different breweries in Belgium, France, Poland and Italy. History The name derives from the Norbertine abbey, which Saint Norbert of Xanten founded in Grimbergen in 1128. It is in this abbey that the beer was first brewed by the monks. They became famous for providing hospitality and their home-brewed beer to visitors. The monks reputedly handed down the recipe over the centuries. When French invaders closed down the monastery at the end of the 18th century, the brewing activities here stopped also. Later, when the abbey was re-established, the brewing activities were not resumed and the monks ordered their beer from local breweries. The Ciney is a Belgian beer native to town of Ciney. In 2000, the Alken-Maes brewery bought the trademark rights to Ciney. A few months later, the brewery was acquired by the English group Scottish & Newcastle. Maes pils is a Belgian pils brewed by Alken-Maes. The beer was first produced in 1930 for Antwerp's Universal Exposition and called Prima Maezenbier. After Jupiler and Stella Artois, it is the third best-selling pilsner in Belgium. In 2008, Alken-Maes was taken over by the Dutch Heineken Brewery. Alken, Belgium
Alken (; ) is a municipality located in Belgian province of Limburg. The community lies just south of the provincial capital of Hasselt, in the Hesbaye region. Alken has about 11,300 residents, which gives the village a larger population than the nearby small cities of Borgloon and Herk-de-Stad. Scottish & Newcastle plc was a brewing company headquartered in Edinburgh, Scotland, which expanded from its home base to become an international business with beer volumes growing almost tenfold. Waarloos
Waarloos is a village and ''deelgemeente'' (sub-municipality) of the municipality of Kontich in the province of Antwerp, Belgium. The village is located about south of the city of Antwerp. History Waarloos was first mentioned in 1188 when the church became part of Lobbes Abbey. The ''heerlijkheid'' (landed estate) belonged to the Lordship of Mechelen. The village was mainly an agricultural community. In 1880, Maes Brewery was established in Waarloos by Egied Maes. Their main product was Maes pils which became one of the best selling beers in Belgium. From 1970 onwards, production of other beers stopped and Maes pils was their only product. Lambic
Lambic ( , ; ) is a type of beer brewed in the Pajottenland region of Belgium southwest of Brussels since the 13th century. Types of lambic beer include gueuze, kriek lambic, and framboise. Lambic differs from most other beers in that it is Brewing#Fermenting, fermented through exposure to Yeast#Ecology, wild yeasts and bacteria native to the Zenne valley, as opposed to exposure to carefully cultivated strains of Saccharomyces, brewer's yeast.
