Aliʻimalemanu Alofa Tuuau
Aliʻimalemanu Alofa Tuuau is a Samoan politician and member of the Legislative Assembly of Samoa. She is a member of the Human Rights Protection Party. Aliʻimalemanu was an accountant before entering politics. She had worked as chief accountant for the Samoa Public Trust Office for thirteen years, as a finance manager for the University of the South Pacific in Fiji for thirteen years, and then as finance manager for the South Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) in Samoa, where she had worked for fourteen years. Tuuau was elected to Parliament in the 2016 Samoan general election, representing the constituency of Alataua West. She served as Chair of Parliamentary Committee for Finance and Expenditure. She lives in Apia, but regularly returns to her village on the island of Savaiʻi. Lafaitele Patrick Leiataualesa
Lafaitele Patrick Leiataualesa (also known as Pat Leota) (born ~1968) is a Samoan politician and former member of the Legislative Assembly of Samoa. He is a member of the Human Rights Protection Party. Lafaitele worked in New Zealand as a fruit picker. In 1988 he was involved in a fight in the Ōtara shopping centre in which a man was hunted down and killed with a machete. He was convicted of manslaughter for his role in the killing and sentenced to six years imprisonment. He was deported in 1992 after serving four years of his sentence. Despite his deportation, he re-entered New Zealand repeatedly using a new passport and a new name. 2021 Samoan General Election
General elections were held in Samoa on 9 April 2021 to determine the composition of the 17th Parliament. The Human Rights Protection Party (HRPP), which had been in government for most of the time since 1982, was led into the election by Tuilaʻepa Saʻilele Malielegaoi, who had served as prime minister since 1998. The passage of the controversial Land and Titles bills by the HRPP led some party members to defect, establishing the Faʻatuatua i le Atua Samoa ua Tasi (FAST) party promising a repeal. FAST elected Fiamē Naomi Mataʻafa, the daughter of Samoa's first prime minister, as leader shortly before the election; she left the ruling party and resigned as deputy prime minister in 2020, also in opposition to the amendments. 2021 Samoan By-elections
Six simultaneous by-elections were held in Samoa on 26 November 2021. They were called in the aftermath of the 2021 Samoan general election, which resulted in seven seats being vacant due to resignations and convictions for bribery and treating. While seven by-elections were called, the contest in Falealupo was resolved without the need for a poll, after the Supreme Court declared the HRPP candidate Tuitogamanaia Peniamina Le'avai to be ineligible, resulting in the FAST Party's Fuiono Tenina Crichton being elected unopposed. The FAST party won four seats, and the HRPP two. Following the by-election, the electoral commission declared Ali'imalemanu Alofa Tuuau and Faagasealii Sapoa Feagiai elected under the women's quota. The Supreme Court of Samoa () is the superior court dealing with the administration of justice in Samoa. It was established by Part VI of the Constitution of Samoa. It consists of the chief justice of Samoa and other judges as appointed by the head of state on the advice of the prime minister of Samoa. Savaiʻi
Savaii is the largest and highest island both in Samoa and in the Samoan Islands chain. The island is also the sixth largest in Polynesia, behind the three main islands of New Zealand and the Hawaiian Islands of Island of Hawaii, Hawaii and Maui. While it is larger than the second main island, Upolu, it is significantly less populated. Samoans sometimes refer to the island of Savaii as Salafai: This is its classical Samoan language, Samoan name, and is used in formal oratory and prose. Seuula Ioane Tuuau (born ~1957) is a Samoan politician and Cabinet Minister. He is a member of the FAST Party. Seuula is from the village of Tufutafoe. He is a former school teacher and principal, and served as principal of Tufutafoe Primary School for 20 years. He was first elected to the Legislative Assembly of Samoa in the April 2021 Samoan general election, defeating Ali'imalemanu Alofa Tuuau. When Tuuau was declared elected under the women's quota on 20 April 2021, he was a party to the court challenge which saw her appointment overturned. On 24 May 2021 he was appointed Minister of Education, Sports and Culture in the elected cabinet of Fiamē Naomi Mataʻafa. The appointment was disputed by the caretaker government. Apia () is the Capital (political), capital and largest city of Samoa. It is located on the central north coast of Upolu, Samoa's second-largest island. Apia falls within the political district (''itūmālō'') of Tuamasaga. The Apia Urban Area (generally known as the City of Apia) has a population of 35,974 (2021 census). Its geographic boundaries extend from the east approximately from Letogo village in Vaimauga to the west in the newer, industrialized region of Apia which extends to Vaitele village in Faleata.
