Alice Springs Camel Cup
The Alice Springs Camel Cup is an annual camel racing festival held in Australia. The race usually occurs at Blatherskite Park in Alice Springs, Northern Territory. The event is organised by the Lions Club of Alice Springs. History The first such event was held in 1970 in the dry bed of the Todd River (Lhere Mparntwe) between two Lions Club members Noel Fullerton and Keith Mooney-Smith. After being held at a number of short term locations in 1979 the race was transferred to a track specially built for camel racing at Blatherskite Park. Camel Racing
Camel racing is a racing sport in which jockeys riding on camels compete against each other to finish a set number of laps around a circular racetrack. It is most popular in Western Asia, North Africa, the Horn of Africa, Pakistan, Mongolia and Australia. Professional camel racing, like horse racing, is an event for betting and tourism. Camels can run at speeds up to 65 km/h (18 m/s; 40 mph) in short sprints and they can maintain a speed of 40 km/h (11 m/s; 25 mph) for an hour. The Todd River (Arrernte language, Arrernte: ''Lhere Mparntwe / Lhere Imatukua / Artepe Ulpaye'') is an Ephemeral, ephemeral river in the southern Northern Territory, central Australia. The origins of the Todd River are in the MacDonnell Ranges, where it flows past the Alice Springs Telegraph Station and then almost through the centre of Alice Springs (Mparntwe). It then flows out of Alice Springs through Heavitree Gap, to the south, and through to the western part of the Simpson Desert, as it becomes a tributary of the Hale River, and eventually flowing into Lake Eyre in South Australia. The Arrernte people know this river as Lhere Mparntwe () where it runs through Alice Springs and Lhere Imatukua () as a whole.
