Todd River
The Todd River (Arrernte language, Arrernte: ''Lhere Mparntwe / Lhere Imatukua / Artepe Ulpaye'') is an Ephemeral, ephemeral river in the southern Northern Territory, central Australia. The origins of the Todd River are in the MacDonnell Ranges, where it flows past the Alice Springs Telegraph Station and then almost through the centre of Alice Springs (Mparntwe). It then flows out of Alice Springs through Heavitree Gap, to the south, and through to the western part of the Simpson Desert, as it becomes a tributary of the Hale River, and eventually flowing into Lake Eyre in South Australia. The Arrernte people know this river as Lhere Mparntwe () where it runs through Alice Springs and Lhere Imatukua () as a whole. These names were recorded by Ted Strehlow, TGH Strehlow in "Songs of Central Australia". MacDonnell Ranges
The MacDonnell Ranges, or Tjoritja in Arrernte language, Arrernte, is a mountain range located in southern Northern Territory. MacDonnell Ranges is also the name given to an Interim Biogeographic Regionalisation for Australia, interim Australian bioregion broadly encompassing the mountain range, with an area of .IBRA Version 6.1 data The range is a long series of mountains in central Australia, consisting of parallel ridges running to the east and west of Alice Springs. The mountain range contains many spectacular gaps and gorges as well as areas of Indigenous Australian, Aboriginal significance. William Mills (surveyor)
William Whitfield Mills (19 November 1844 – 18 August 1916), usually referred to as "W. Whitfield Mills" or "W. W. Mills", was an English surveyor of the Australian Overland Telegraph Line who is best known for naming a waterhole in Central Australia Alice Spring, from which the town of Alice Springs now takes its name. He also named Heavitree Gap as a tribute to his old school in Devon, England. Early life Mills was born on 19 November 1844 at Plymouth in England. He went to school at Heavitree School in Devon. Mills immigrated to Australia on board the ''Atlanta'' from England, arriving in South Australia on 8 April 1866 at the age of 21. Goyder's Expedition Mills was a surveyor on George Goyder's mission to survey a northern capital Palmerston, later renamed Darwin. He arrived on the ''Moonta'' on 5 February 1869 leaving just short of a year later, the team having surveyed more than 2700 square kilometres of land. Henley-on-Todd Regatta
The Henley-on-Todd Regatta is a "boat" race held annually in the typically dry sandy bed of the Todd River in Alice Springs, Australia. It began – and continues – cautiously as a joke at the expense of the original British colonisers and the formal atmosphere of the British river races which continue today. Every year on the third Saturday of August, the town holds a mock regatta which large numbers of locals and tourists attend. Food and drink are sold at stalls, "no fishing" signs are put up, and the celebration takes all day. It is the only dry river regatta in the world; thus, in 1993 the event was cancelled for the year due to water in the river. However, the Alice Springs Hash House Harriers and Katherine Hash House Harriers running groups put their boat entry into the water and completed the course under protest of the track officials. Dick Kimber
Richard "Dick" Glyn Kimber (1939 - 16 September 2024) was an Australian historian and author who wrote extensively on the history, art, culture and wildlife of Central Australia. He published several books, the best known of which is ''Man From Arltunga: Walter Smith, Australian Bushman'' (1986) as well as more than 100 articles and essays. He also gave public lectures and made regular media appearances. Early life and education Richard Glyn Kimber was born in 1939 at Freeling, South Australia, Freeling in South Australia. He went to school in the Riverland area and Brighton and then attended the University of Adelaide and Adelaide Teacher's College. Charles River (Alice Springs)
The Charles River, which is often called Charles Creek (), is an ephemeral stream in the southern Northern Territory. It is a tributary of the Todd River and, like the Todd River, its naming is associated with Charles Todd; a senior civil servant involved with the Overland Telegraph Line. The Arrernte name for the river is ''Anthelke Ulpaye'' and this name is shared with a nearby Alice Springs Town Camp which is situated on its banks: this camp was once the site of the Little Flower Mission and is now commonly referred to as Charles Creek Camp. The Alice Springs Telegraph Station, which was once The Bungalow, is also situated close by. The Charles River is long and has a catchment area of and it flows into Alice Springs from the MacDonnell Ranges to ANZAC Hill, where it joins with the Todd River. Australian Overland Telegraph Line
The Australian Overland Telegraph Line was an electrical telegraph system for sending messages the between Darwin, in what is now the Northern Territory of Australia, and Adelaide, the capital of South Australia. Completed in 1872 (with a line to Western Australia added in 1877), it allowed fast communication between Australia and the rest of the world. When it was linked to the Java-to-Darwin submarine telegraph cable several months later, the communication time with Europe dropped from months to hours; Australia was no longer so isolated from the rest of the world.
