Alfarelos Train Crash
The Alfarelos train crash occurred on 21 January 2013 at the Alfarelos station, in the Portuguese Northern Line. Two trains crashed, after both passed signals at danger, wounding 25 people and halting the Northern Line for three days. Context On the day of the accident, services were operating as usual in the Northern Line. At 19:30, an InterCity train left Lisbon Santa Apolónia towards Porto Campanhã. About half an hour later, at 19:55, a train left Entroncamento, away from Santa Apolónia, making the regional service towards Coimbra, where it was scheduled to arrive at 21:51. Both trains were expected to meet at around 21:17 in Alfarelos, where the InterCity would overtake the regional. Crash The inquiry commission led by CP and REFER collected information about the events that led to the collision. CP Class 2240
The CP 2240-class is an electric multiple unit used by the national train operator Comboios de Portugal. Each Electric multiple unit, EMU features 3 cars, with the ends being driving trailers, and the middle being a power car (which houses the traction motors). The units were assembled between 2003 and 2005, by Alstom, reusing the old Sorefame body shells belonging to the CP Class 2100, 2100, 2150 and 2200-class EMU's, to keep cost down and avoid fully scrapping old rolling stock. The bogies were custom-built with new Alstom traction motors, and are in the Iberian-gauge railways, 1668mm Iberian gauge. They are able to operate in multiple configuration with up to 3 units, for a total of 9 passenger cars. A sandbox is a container on most locomotives, multiple units and trams that holds sand, which is dropped on the rail in front of the driving wheels in wet and slippery conditions and on steep grades to improve traction. Sand delivery The sand may be delivered by gravity, by a steam-blast (steam locomotives) or by compressed air. Gravity sanding requires that the sand be dry so that it runs freely. Locomotives use multiple sandboxes, so that their delivery pipes could be short and nearly vertical. Engine sheds in the UK were equipped with sand drying stoves, so that sandboxes could be refilled each morning with dry sand. EBICAB is a trademark registered by Bombardier (later Alstom) for the equipment on board a train used as a part of an Automatic Train Control system. EBICAB was originally derived from Ericsson's SLR system in Sweden. Most trains in Sweden and Norway use a similar on-board system, Ansaldo L10000 (more known as ATC-2) from Bombardier's competitor Ansaldo STS (now Hitachi Rail STS). ATC-2 was also developed in Sweden. These on-board systems use pairs of balises mounted on the sleepers.
