Alexandre Guilliermond
Marie Antoine Alexandre Guilliermond (19 August 1876 – 1 April 1945) was a French botanist and mycologist who specialized in cytological studies of the yeasts, fungi, and algae. He was among the first to identify sexual reproduction in yeast and published a major review on the yeasts in 1912. Born in Lyons to physician Jacques Guilliermond (1841-1878) and Madeleine Rollet (1856-1893), daughter of professor of hygiene Joseph Rollet, Guilliermond grew up with a numerous physicians in the family. He lost his father at a young age and after his mother remarried he grew up as a shy and reticent youth. He became interested in botany after joining the faculty of sciences at Lyon in 1897. He was influenced by the teaching of Maurice Caullery, Eugène Bataillon, and Louis Matruchot. He graduated in 1899 and began to study the yeasts, receiving a doctorate in 1902. The Comité des travaux historiques et scientifiques (CTHS) (''Committee for Historic and Scientific Works'') is a French research institution created by the Minister of Public Education François Guizot on 18 July 1834 for the purpose of 'leading research and making available unpublished documents, with funds voted from the state budget." Its mission includes promoting the work of learned societies. It is currently affiliated to the École Nationale des Chartes. Hanseniaspora Guilliermondii
''Hanseniaspora guilliermondii'' is a species of yeast in the family Saccharomycetaceae. In its anamorph form, it is called ''Kloeckera apis''. Taxonomy The initial sample of the species was isolated by South African pathologist Adrianus Pijper from an infected nail from a patient and assigned the name ''H. guilliermondii''. In 1952, the species was placed in synonymy with '' Hanseniaspora valbyensis''. In 1968, N. J. W. Kerger-Van Rij and Donald G. Ahearn, observed physiological and morphological differences between ''H. valbyensis'' and ''H. guilliermondii'' and proposed a resumed separation of the two species. Their study identified that a third strain, originally described as ''H. melligeri'' by J. Lodder in 1932 that had been isolated from dates and later synonymized with ''H. valbyensis'', was synonymous with ''H. guilliermondii''. ''Meyerozyma guilliermondii'' (formerly known as ''Pichia guilliermondii'' until its rename in 2010) is a species of yeast of the genus '' Meyerozyma'' whose asexual or anamorphic form is known as ''Candida guilliermondii''. ''Candida guilliermondii'' has been isolated from numerous human infections, mostly of cutaneous origin, if only from immunosuppressed patients. ''C. guilliermondii'' has also been isolated from normal skin and in seawater, feces of animals, fig wasps, buttermilk, leather, fish, and beer. ''Saccharomyces'' is a genus of fungi that includes many species of yeasts. ''Saccharomyces'' is from Greek σάκχαρον (sugar) and μύκης (fungus) and means ''sugar fungus''. Many members of this genus are considered very important in food production. It is known as the brewer's yeast or baker's yeast. They are unicellular and saprotrophic fungi. One example is ''Saccharomyces cerevisiae'', which is used in making bread, wine, and beer, and for human and animal health.
