Alexander Bercovitch
Alexander Bercovitch (March 15, 1891January 07, 1951) was a painter, set designer and teacher, known for his lively picturing and Expressionist intensity of colour. He was an important part of the art scene in Montreal in the 1930s and 1940s, as well as a founding member of the Eastern Group of Painters in 1938 and the Contemporary Arts Society in 1939. Career Bercovitch was born in Kherson, Ukraine. As a boy of nine, he watched the painting of icons at the local monastery and it fascinated him. The monks gave him basic painting lessons and by age 15, he was designing sets and costumes for Kherson's Yiddish language theatre groups. In 1907, He went to Jerusalem to study at the Bezalel School of Arts and Crafts, then returned to Kerson in 1910 and that year moved to St Petersburg to attend the Bakst-Dobujinsky school. Sam Borenstein
Sam Borenstein (15 January 1908 – 15 December 1969) was a Canadian painter. During his forty-year career he painted numerous scenes of Montreal and Laurentian villages and Quebec landscapes. Borenstein was best known for his expressionistic cityscapes and rural scenes, but also painted numerous portraits and still lifes. Career Born in Kalvarija, Lithuania, Russian Empire in 1908, Borenstein immigrated to Canada in 1921, and moved to Montreal with his father and one of his sisters. He spent two years in Ottawa, then returned to Montreal, where he worked in the garment industry. Although he had little formal training, Borenstein took evening art classes, studying sculpture with Elzéar Soucy and drawing with Adam Sheriff Scott and John Young Johnstone, and associating with local artists Alexandre Bercovitch, Fritz Brandtner, Herman Heimlich, and Louis Muhlstock. The Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec (), abbreviated as MNBAQ, is an art museum in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. The museum is located in National Battlefields Park and is a complex of four buildings. Three of them were purpose-built for the museum and one was originally a provincial prison. The institution was opened as the Musée de la province de Québec in 1933. Joliette () is a city in southwest Quebec, Canada. It is approximately northeast of Montreal, on the L'Assomption River and is the seat of the Regional County Municipality of Joliette. Marc-Aurèle Fortin
Marc-Aurèle Fortin (; March 14, 1888 – March 2, 1970) was a Québécois painter, known best for paintings that convey the charm of small-town Quebec. Career Marc-Aurèle Fortin was born in 1888 in Ste-Rose, Quebec, son of Thomas Fortin. He studied in Montreal under Ludger Larose and Edmond Dyonnet, then under Edward J. Timmons at the Art Institute of Chicago. Upon his return to Montreal in 1914, Fortin held various jobs and painted in his spare time. It was in 1920, after a short trip to England and France, that he began to seriously paint and exhibit his works. He was known for painting landscapes of the St. Lawrence Valley, which he travelled around by bicycle. John Goodwin Lyman
John Goodwin Lyman (September 29, 1886 – May 26, 1967) was an American-born Canadian modernist painter active largely in Montreal, Quebec. In the 1930s he did much to promote modern art in Canada, founding the Contemporary Art Society in 1939. Stylistically he opposed both the Group of Seven and the Canadian Group of Painters, painting in a more refined style influenced by the School of Paris. Esther Wertheimer
Esther Wertheimer (née Estera Sheps) (1926 – August 18, 2016) was a Canadian sculptor and educator. She is known for her semi-abstract figurative bronze sculptures and portrait busts in terra cotta. During the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, Wertheimer lived semi-annually at the artist's colony and sculpture foundry in Pietrasanta, Italy. Career She was born in Łódź, Poland, and emigrated with her parents to Canada as a baby. She grew up in Montreal, and studied dance at age eight and later, ballet. Ghitta Caiserman-Roth
Ghitta Caiserman-Roth (March 2, 1923 – November 25, 2005) was a Canadian painter and printmaker. She was a founder of the Montreal Artist School and her work is in the National Gallery of Canada. Caiserman-Roth was also an associate member of the Royal Canadian Academy and the first painter to receive the Governor General's Award for Visual Media and Art. Rita Briansky
Rita Briansky (25 July 1925 – 24 April 2025) was a Polish-born Canadian painter and printmaker. Briansky was associated with the Jewish Painters of Montreal. Early life Briansky was born in Grajewo, Poland on 25 July 1925. She emigrated to Ontario, Canada with her mother and two sisters in 1929. The year they arrived, the family moved to Ansonville in northern Ontario, then Val d'Or, Quebec in 1939, and then to Montreal in 1941. She studied with Alexander Bercovitch at the Y.W.H.A. Moe Reinblatt
Moses Reinblatt (June 20, 1917 – August 24, 1979) was a Canadian painter, printmaker, sculptor, and art teacher. He was associated with the Jewish Painters of Montreal. Biography Moe Reinblatt was born in Montreal to Jewish parents Manya (, 1925) and Joseph Reinblatt. His grandfather, Baruch, was an immigrant from Russian Bessarabia. Reinblatt studied art with Anne Savage at Baron Byng High School from 1932 to 1935, and under painter Alexander Bercovitch at the Montreal YM-YWHA from 1935 to 1942, working meanwhile at his father's embroidery business. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in April 1942. He was posted to RCAF Station Mont-Joli as an airframe mechanic, eventually rising to the rank of leading aircraftman. The T. Eaton Company Limited, later known as Eaton's, was a Canadian department store chain that was once the largest in the country. It was founded in 1869 in Toronto by Timothy Eaton, an immigrant from what is now Northern Ireland.
