Joliette () is a city in southwest Quebec, Canada. It is approximately northeast of Montreal, on the L'Assomption River and is the seat of the Regional County Municipality of Joliette. It is considered to be a part of the North Shore of Greater Montreal. The city is home to the Joliette Art Museum, whose works of art include paintings, sculptures, paper artwork and a large collection of art from the French Middle Ages. Joliette has 3 Francophone high schools and 1 Anglophone high school, as well as the Joliette campus of the Cégep régional de Lanaudière. It was founded as L'Industrie by the businessman Barthélemy Joliette in 1823 and was incorporated as a city in 1863, when it changed its name to Joliette. The city's economy is mainly in the manufacturing and service sectors. The largest gravel manufacturer in the area, Graybec, is located in Joliette and exploits a huge quarry just outside the city. Joliette () is a provincial electoral district in the Lanaudière region of Quebec, Canada that elects members to the National Assembly of Quebec. It notably includes the cities of Joliette and Saint-Charles-Borromée. It was created for the 1867 Quebec general election, 1867 election (and an electoral district of that name existed earlier in the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada). Barthélemy Joliette
Barthélemy Joliette (September 9, 1789 – June 21, 1850) was a notary, businessman, seigneur and political figure in Lower Canada and Canada East. He was a descendant of Louis Jolliet. Early years He was born Barthélemy Jolliet in the parish of Saint-Thomas at Montmagny in 1789, a descendant of the explorer Louis Jolliet. After his father's death, his mother remarried and he grew up in L'Assomption. He articled as a notary with his uncle, Joseph-Édouard Faribault, was qualified to practice in 1810 and set up practice in L'Assomption. Career and marriage Joliette served as a captain in the local militia during the War of 1812. In 1813, he married Charlotte Lanaudière, daughter of Charles-Gaspard Tarieu de Lanaudière and received as dowry part of the seigneury of Lavaltrie. The Cégep régional de Lanaudière is a Cégep, made up of three constituent colleges in Joliette, L'Assomption and Terrebonne, located in Quebec, Canada. The Assomption River (in French ''Rivière l'Assomption'' , named after the Assumption of Mary) is the most important waterway in the Lanaudière region of Quebec, Canada.
