Alain Labrousse
Alain Labrousse (19 February 1937 – 6 July 2016) was a French sociologist and journalist who specialized in Latin American politics and the geopolitics of drugs. Biography He was born in Libourne, Gironde. He studied literature in Bordeaux, then sociology at the Sorbonne. After completing his doctorate, he taught at the French lycée in Montevideo for five years (1965–1970), during a period when the political situation in Uruguay was becoming increasingly restive. Labrousse drew on this experience to write his first work on urban guerrilla warfare, '' Les Tupamaros'' (Seuil, 1971). The book was translated into English and published by Penguin Books as part of their Pelican Latin American Library series. José Mujica
José Alberto "Pepe" Mujica Cordano (20May 193513May 2025) was a Uruguayan politician, revolutionary and farmer who served as the 40th president of Uruguay from 2010 to 2015. A former guerrilla with the Tupamaros, he was tortured and imprisoned for 14 years during the military dictatorship in the 1970s and 1980s. A member of the Broad Front coalition of left-wing parties, Mujica was the minister of Livestock, Agriculture, and Fisheries from 2005 to 2008 and a senator afterwards. As the candidate of the Broad Front, he won the 2009 presidential election and took office as president on 1 March 2010. Mujica's administration implemented a range of progressive policies, including the decriminalization of abortion, the legalization of marijuana consumption and the legalization of same-sex marriage. "Que sais-je?" (QSJ) (; Literally: "What do I know?", ) is an editorial collection published by the Presses universitaires de France (PUF). The aim of the series is to provide the lay reader with an accessible introduction to a field of study written by an expert in the field. As such, they are a good example of ''haute vulgarization'' (high popularization). The phrase "Que sais-je?" is taken from the works of French essayist Michel de Montaigne and means "What do I know?" Started in 1941 by Paul Angoulvent (1899–1976), founder of the Presses Universitaires de France, the series now numbers over 3,900 titles by more than 2,500 authors, and various volumes, taken all together, have been translated into more than 43 languages. Some titles have sold more than 300,000 copies (namely by Piaget). Each year, 50 to 60 new titles are added to the collection, which comprises ten different series. The Pelican Latin American Library (PLAL) was a specialist series of books published by Penguin Books UK in the 1970s. The series was inaugurated in the wake of the success of another Penguin imprint, the Penguin African Library. The general editor of the series was Richard Gott, the longtime Latin America correspondent of the Guardian. The series took off at a time when Latin American politics was buffeted by numerous challenges such as military dictatorship, American hegemony, widespread poverty, and guerrilla uprisings often inspired by Marxist liberation theology. Libourne
Libourne (; ) is a commune in the Gironde department in Nouvelle-Aquitaine in southwestern France. It is a sub-prefecture of the department. It is the wine-making capital of northern Gironde and lies near Saint-Émilion and Pomerol. Geography Libourne is located at the confluence of the Isle and Dordogne rivers.
