Al-Wathba Sport Club ( ar, نادي الوثبة الرياضي) is a Syrian professional football club based in Homs, that competes in the Syrian Premier League. History Al-Wathba is a professional football club based in Homs, Syria, and they are one of the oldest Syrian clubs. Al-Wathba were founded in 1937 under the name of "Al-Fedaa Club" by a number of young amateur athletes who took "Dar Al-Jodi" (located in al-Hamidiyah neighborhood in Homs), as a place to practice their sport activities. In 1953, the club obtained the license, adding football, basketball games, athletics, swimming, and cycling, and they won the Homs championship from 1963 to 1968. Al-Wathba is the first football club represented the city of Homs in the Syrian Premier League which started in 1973. The club was very close to winning the Premier League many times during the 1980s, or the "golden age" according to their fans, the best place they achieved is 2nd in the 1981–82 season. Syrian Premier League
The Syrian Premier League ( ar, الدوري السوري الممتاز) is a professional association football league in Syria and the top division in of the Syrian football league system. The league comprises 12 teams and operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the Syrian League 1st Division. The Syrian Premier League was founded in 1966, unifying the local leagues that had existed previously. Seasons mostly run from August to May. The first team to win the title was Al-Ittihad in 1967, whilst Al-Jaish has the record with 17 league titles. Their closest rivals, Al-Karamah, have won the league 8 times. Syrian Cup
The Syrian Cup ( ar, سوريا) is Syria's premier knockout Cup tournament in men's football. It was first contested in 1959. Al-Ittihad SC has won the competition on 10 occasions. The final was first played in the 1960-61 season during the UAR era and won by Al-Majd SC. The tournament has been held annually since then except for the 1963, 1972, 1974, 1975, 1976 and 1977 seasons. Khalid ibn al-Walid Stadium () is a multi-use stadium located in the Syrian city of Homs. It is the 3rd-largest football stadium in Syria and is mostly used for football matches. It serves as a home ground of Al-Karamah SC and Al-Wathba SC and holds around 32,000 spectators. Bassel Al-Assad Stadium (Homs)
Bassel al-Assad Stadium () is a multi-use stadium located in the Baba Amr district in the city of Homs, Syria. It was opened in 2000, and is mostly used for football matches and serves as a second venue for the football clubs of Al-Karamah SC and Al-Wathba SC. Located in the Baba Amr district of the city, the stadium is able to hold up to 25,000 spectators. It was renovated in 2010. During the Syrian Civil War, Baba Amr was the epicentre of fighting in the 2012 Homs offensive. As a result, the stadium was heavily damaged and the playing surface was entirely deteriorated. However, the stadium was renovated during 2016 and a new turf was installed. Yussef Sleman
Yussef Suleiman ( ar, يوسف سليمان, also transcribed as Sleman; 17 September 1986 – 20 February 2013) was a Syrian football player. Suleiman was born in Homs and last played for Al-Wathba SC. He was killed by a mortar shell fired by the armed opposition during the Syrian civil war, while preparing for training practice inside a hotel in Baramkeh, Damascus. The attack occurred a few hours before the team was to play a league game against the Hama-based Nawair club at Tishreen Stadium in Damascus. His teammates reported that he was the father of a six-month-old baby. FIFA president Sepp Blatter expressed his condolences in an open letter to the Syrian Football Association over the matter. Tishreen Stadium ( ar, مَلْعَب تِشْرِين, Malʿab Tišrīn) is a multi-use all-seater stadium in Damascus, Syria, currently used mostly for association football, football matches and serves as the home venue of the al-Shorta SC (Damascus), al-Shorta SC.
