Al-Qaeda In Yemen
Al-Qaeda in Yemen (AQY), later known as al-Qaeda in the Southern Arabian Peninsula (AQSAP) from March 2008 onwards, was a Sunni Islam, Sunni Islamism, Islamist militant organization which operated as al-Qaeda's local affiliate in Yemen. The group operated in two iterations; once between 1998 and 2003, and from 2006 to 2009. Al-Qaeda activity in Yemen first began as Abdul Rahim al-Nashiri received permission from Osama bin Laden to plan an attack in the country in 1998. Some time between then and before 2000, Bin Laden also authorized Abu Ali al-Harithi to travel to Yemen and begin planning attacks. Harithi would be recognized as the leader of AQY, which was characterized as a collection of al-Qaeda cells which organized around discrete terrorist plots and aiding the international al-Qaeda network. Al-Qaeda in the Lands of the Islamic Maghreb (, ), or AQIM, is an Islamist militant organization (of al-Qaeda) that aims to overthrow the Algerian government and institute an Islamic state. To that end, it was then engaged in an insurgency campaign in the Maghreb and Sahel regions. The group originated as the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC). It has since declared its intention to attack European (including Spanish and French) and American targets. The group has been designated a terrorist organization by the United Nations, Australia, Canada, Malaysia, Russia, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom and the United States. Membership is mostly drawn from the Algerian and local Saharan communities (such as the Tuaregs and Berabiche tribal clans of Mali), as well as Moroccans from city suburbs of the North African country. 2002 Marib Airstrike
On 3 November 2002, a CIA-operated MQ-1 Predator drone launched an airstrike on a vehicle travelling on a highway through the al-Naqaa desert of Marib Governorate, Yemen. The strike destroyed the vehicle and killed six suspected militants, including its target Abu Ali al-Harithi, the leader of al-Qaeda in Yemen. The operation was the first drone strike conducted by the United States outside of Afghanistan. Harithi had been wanted for several years by both the Yemeni and American government for involvement in the USS ''Cole'' bombing. After Yemeni special forces failed to capture him in a raid in December 2001, the Yemeni government allowed the US to fly surveillance drones over the country to search for his location. MV Limburg
''Maritime Jewel'' was a double-hulled oil tanker launched in 1999 and completed in 2000. Entering service that year, the ship was known as MV ''Limburg'' until 2003. The ship carried crude oil between ports in Iran and Malaysia. On 6 October 2002, ''Limburg'' was attacked by suicide bombers, causing roughly to leak into the Gulf of Aden. One crew member was killed and twelve more wounded in the attack. Four days after the attack, the tanker was towed to Dubai where she was repaired and renamed ''Maritime Jewel''. MV Limburg Bombing
The MV ''Limburg'' bombing was a suicide attack targeting the MV ''Limburg'', a French-owned oil tanker travelling off the coast of Yemen, on 6 October 2002. At the time of the bombing, the ''Limburg'' was preparing to receive a pilot boat to guide it to the al-Dhabba port near Mukalla in order to collect its oil cargo to deliver in Malaysia. At this time, a small fishing boat driven by two men and loaded with explosives was driven into side of the ship, starting a large fire and forcing the crew to eventually abandon it. Excluding the two suicide bombers, the attack killed one crew member, injured 12, and spilled 90,000 barrels of crude oil into the Gulf of Aden. Yemeni officials initially denied that the explosion was a terrorist attack, but a joint investigation conducted with French authorities and United States Navy officers eventually ruled it as so. USS Cole Bombing
The USS ''Cole'' bombing was a suicide attack by Al-Qaeda against , a guided missile destroyer of the United States Navy, on 12 October 2000, while it was being refueled in Yemen's Aden harbor. Seventeen U.S. Navy sailors were killed and thirty-seven injured in the deadliest attack against a United States naval vessel since the USS ''Stark'' incident in 1987. Al-Qaeda claimed responsibility for the attack. A U.S. judge has held Sudan liable for the attack, while another has released over $13 million in Sudanese frozen assets to the relatives of those killed. The United States Navy has reconsidered its rules of engagement in response to this attack. Abu Ali Al-Harithi
Qaed Salim Sinan al-Harithi (19553 November 2002), also known by his ''nom de guerre'' Abu Ali al-Harithi, was a Yemeni Islamist militant who served as the leader of al-Qaeda in Yemen (AQY) from some time before 2000 until his death in 2002. Harithi developed a relationship with Osama bin Laden while fighting alongside him in the Soviet–Afghan War. He was sent to Yemen by Bin Laden in the late 1990s to assist in planning al-Qaeda attacks. Harithi was regarded as the highest-ranking leader among al-Qaeda operatives in Yemen by late 2001. He was implicated in several al-Qaeda attacks in Yemen, including the USS ''Cole'' bombing in October 2000 and the MV ''Limburg'' bombing in October 2002. Osama Bin Laden
Osama bin Laden (10 March 19572 May 2011) was a militant leader who was the founder and first general emir of al-Qaeda. Ideologically a pan-Islamist, Bin Laden participated in the Afghan ''mujahideen'' against the Soviet Union, and supported the Bosnian ''mujahideen'' during the Yugoslav Wars. Opposed to American foreign policy in the Middle East, Bin Laden declared war on the United States in 1996 and advocated attacks targeting U.S. assets in various countries, and supervised the execution of the September 11 attacks inside the U.S. in 2001. Born in Riyadh to the aristocratic bin Laden family, he studied at Saudi and foreign universities until 1979, when he joined the ''mujahideen'' fighting against the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Abdul Rahim Al-Nashiri
Abdul Rahim Hussein Muhammed Abdu al-Nashiri (; ; born January 5, 1965) is a Saudi Arabian citizen alleged to be the mastermind of the bombing of USS ''Cole'' and other maritime attacks. He is alleged to have headed al-Qaeda operations in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf states prior to his capture in November 2002 by the CIA's Special Activities Division. Al-Nashiri was captured in Dubai in 2002 and held for four years in secret CIA prisons known as "black sites" in Afghanistan, Thailand, Poland, Morocco, Lithuania and Romania, before being transferred to the Guantanamo Bay detention camp. While being interrogated, al-Nashiri was tortured by being waterboarded. In 2005 the CIA destroyed the tapes of Nashiri's waterboarding.
