MV Limburg Bombing
The MV ''Limburg'' bombing was a suicide attack targeting the MV ''Limburg'', a French-owned oil tanker travelling off the coast of Yemen, on 6 October 2002. At the time of the bombing, the ''Limburg'' was preparing to receive a pilot boat to guide it to the al-Dhabba port near Mukalla in order to collect its oil cargo to deliver in Malaysia. At this time, a small fishing boat driven by two men and loaded with explosives was driven into side of the ship, starting a large fire and forcing the crew to eventually abandon it. Excluding the two suicide bombers, the attack killed one crew member, injured 12, and spilled 90,000 barrels of crude oil into the Gulf of Aden. Yemeni officials initially denied that the explosion was a terrorist attack, but a joint investigation conducted with French authorities and United States Navy officers eventually ruled it as so. Gulf Of Aden
The Gulf of Aden (; ) is a deepwater gulf of the Indian Ocean between Yemen to the north, the Arabian Sea to the east, Djibouti to the west, and the Guardafui Channel, the Socotra Archipelago, Puntland in Somalia and Somaliland to the south. In the northwest, it connects with the Red Sea through the Bab-el-Mandeb strait, and it connects with the Arabian Sea to the east. To the west, it narrows into the Gulf of Tadjoura in Djibouti. The Aden Ridge lies along the middle of the gulf, and tectonic activity at the ridge is causing the gulf to widen by about per year. USS Cole Bombing
The USS ''Cole'' bombing was a suicide attack by Al-Qaeda against , a guided missile destroyer of the United States Navy, on 12 October 2000, while it was being refueled in Yemen's Aden harbor. Seventeen U.S. Navy sailors were killed and thirty-seven injured in the deadliest attack against a United States naval vessel since the USS ''Stark'' incident in 1987. Al-Qaeda claimed responsibility for the attack. A U.S. judge has held Sudan liable for the attack, while another has released over $13 million in Sudanese frozen assets to the relatives of those killed. The United States Navy has reconsidered its rules of engagement in response to this attack. Al-Qaeda in Yemen (AQY), later known as al-Qaeda in the Southern Arabian Peninsula (AQSAP) from March 2008 onwards, was a Sunni Islam, Sunni Islamism, Islamist militant organization which operated as al-Qaeda's local affiliate in Yemen. The group operated in two iterations; once between 1998 and 2003, and from 2006 to 2009. Al-Qaeda activity in Yemen first began as Abdul Rahim al-Nashiri received permission from Osama bin Laden to plan an attack in the country in 1998. Some time between then and before 2000, Bin Laden also authorized Abu Ali al-Harithi to travel to Yemen and begin planning attacks.
