Kazakhstan is divided into 17 regions (; ; ; ) and 4 cities. The regions are further subdivided into districts of Kazakhstan, districts (; ; ; ). The four cities, Almaty, Baikonur, Shymkent, and the capital city Astana, do not belong to their surrounding regions. Initially there were 14 regions. On 16 March 2022, President of Kazakhstan, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev announced that three new regions would be created. Abai Region was created from East Kazakhstan Region with its capital in Semey. Ulytau Region was created from Karaganda Region with its capital in Jezkazgan. North Kazakhstan Region
North Kazakhstan Region (; ) is a region of Kazakhstan, with a population of 522,171. Its capital is Petropavl, with a population of 221,907 people. It is the only region of Kazakhstan in which ethnic Kazakhs don't make up a majority. History During the 19th century, the territory of the region was home to several Middle Zhuz tribes, including Argyns, Kerei, and Kypshak. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the region underwent significant resettlement as a result of the opening of the Siberian railway and the Stolypin agrarian reform. An ''akim'' (, , әкімдер / ''äkimder''; ; , ) is the head of a local government in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. ''Akim'' is derived from the Arabic word '' hakim'', which means "ruler" or "governor". Taldyaral (), is a lake in Akkayin District, North Kazakhstan Region, Kazakhstan. Taldyaral is located to the southeast of Smirnovo, the district capital. Geography Taldyaral is an endorheic lake of the Ishim river basin. It lies at the southern edge of the Ishim Plain in the Kamyshlov Log, an alignment of disconnected lakes which is the bed of ancient river Kamyshlov. With a length of over Taldyaral is the largest of the lakes in the tract between lake Ulken Torangyl and Petropavl city. Shaglyteniz
Shaglyteniz or Shagalalyteniz (; ) is a lake in Akkayin and Taiynsha districts, North Kazakhstan Region, Kazakhstan. The villages of Barykol, Kurya, Intaly, Elizavetinka and Kuchkovka lie near the lakeshore. Taiynsha town lies to the south of the lake. Road P-249 runs close to the northern end of Shaglyteniz. The lake and its adjacent marshes are an important bird area, but much under threat owing to human interaction. Geography Shaglyteniz lies in the southern part of the Ishim Plain, southwest of the Russian border. It is one of the main lakes of the region. It is an endorheic lake located at the bottom of a depression.
