Ahmed Yahya Mahmoud Al-Hajjaj (, born 1 July 1995) is an Iraqi professional footballer who currently plays for Iraq Stars League club Al-Shorta and the Iraq national team. International Career On 16 June 2023, Yahya earned his first international cap with Iraq against Colombia in a friendly match. Iraq National Football Team
The Iraq national football team ( ar, منتخب العراق لكرة القدم) represents Iraq in international football and is controlled by the Iraq Football Association (IFA), the governing body for football in Iraq. Iraq's usual home venue is the Basra International Stadium. Iraq have made one FIFA World Cup appearance in 1986, scoring their only goal against Belgium. They are one of eight current AFC nations to have won the AFC Asian Cup, claiming the title in 2007 in spite of difficult conditions and limited preparation. Iraq defeated some of the favourites in the competition including Australia, South Korea and Saudi Arabia. The 2023–24 Iraq Stars League is the 50th season of the highest tier football league in Iraq since its establishment in 1974, and the first season since launching as a professional league under the name Iraq Stars League. The season started on 26 October 2023 and will end on 5 July 2024. Al-Shorta Sports Club ( ar, نادي الشرطة الرياضي, lit=''Police Sports Club'') is an Iraqi sports club based in Al-Rusafa, Baghdad. It has teams in 17 different sports, more than any other Iraqi club, and the best known section of the club is the football team, whose origins date back to 1932. In 1974, following the Iraq Football Association's decision to implement a clubs-only policy for domestic competitions, Al-Shorta were established as a sports club. Al-Shorta are one of Iraq's most successful clubs, having been crowned the inaugural Arab Club Champions Cup winners in 1982, and are the current Iraqi Premier League champions, winning their fifth title in the 2021–22 season. Al-Minaa Sports Club ( ar, نادي الميناء الرياضي, lit=Port Sports Club) is an Iraqi multi-sport club based in Al-Maqal, Basra that participates in the Iraq Division One, the second tier of Iraqi football. It is one of the most popular clubs in Iraq, particularly in the south, and became the first club outside Baghdad to win the Iraqi Premier League. Al-Minaa was founded on November 22, 1931, in Al-Maqal. In 1974, the club was merged with another team called Al-Bareed to form a single club called Al-Muwasalat, and it was a strange situation because the Al-Bareed team were based in Baghdad while Al-Minaa were based in Basra and the two teams met in Baghdad on the day of the match only, so after just one season the club was dissolved and Al-Minaa returned in their place. The Iraqi Super Cup ( ar, كأس السوبر العراقي), previously called Iraqi Perseverance Cup ( ar, كأس المثابرة العراقي), is Iraqi football's annual match contested between the champions of the previous Iraqi Premier League season and the holders of the Iraq FA Cup. If the Premier League champions also won the FA Cup then the league runners-up provide the opposition. The fixture is a recognised football super cup. Extra-time is not played in the case of a draw; the game goes straight to penalties instead. The current holders are Al-Shorta, who defeated Al-Karkh 1–0 in the 2022 match. 2023–24 Iraq FA Cup
The 2023–24 Iraq FA Cup was the 34th edition of the Iraqi knockout football cup as a club competition, the main domestic cup in Iraqi football. Due to time constraints, only clubs from the top two tiers of the Iraqi football league system participated in the competition. The tournament began on 26 January 2024 with the first round between Iraqi Premier Division League clubs and the lower-placed Iraq Stars League clubs, before the top Iraq Stars League clubs entered the competition in the Round of 16. The final was played on 10 July 2024 at Al-Shaab Stadium in Baghdad. The winners of the competition were Al-Shorta, who won their first title with a 1–0 victory over Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya.
