Agahi (newspaper)
''Agahi'' () is a weekly published by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Karachi. It is the first such paper to be published in Urdu – the national language – not only in the diocese but in the whole country. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Lahore publishes an Urdu-language newspaper called Catholic Naqib but this is a fortnightly publication. The planned format is to have a minimum of eight pages plus two to four pages of announcements and advertisements. ''Agahis editor, Fr Arthur Charles, is convinced about the suitability of the title of the newspaper, which aims to impart "knowledge, information and insight". The newspaper features eight pages of editorial with another two to four for advertisement. Archbishop Evarist Pinto said: "In our age more than in any other, we can not neglect the influence of the media and mass communication and their potential for proclaiming the Word of God. Roman Catholic Archdiocese Of Karachi
The Archdiocese of Karachi is a Latin Church ecclesiastical territory or archdiocese of the Catholic Church in Pakistan. It was erected on 20 May 1948 under as a then-suffragan diocese in the ecclesiastical province of the metropolitan Archdiocese of Bombay. History The Augustinians were the first to start a mission in the village of Kolachi in the 17th century. They were followed by the Discalced Carmelites who worked in the area until 1672. Around 1842–1843, the Carmelites once again attended to the spiritual needs of the British troops. The Capuchin order served from 1852 and then the Jesuits from 1856 to 1934. On 1 June 1934, it was declared a Mission under the Franciscans. It was elevated as the Archdiocese of Karachi on 15 July 1950 when the priests of the Archdiocese took over the management from the Franciscans. The Roman Catholic Metropolitan Archdiocese of Lahore is a Latin Metropolitan Archdiocese in Punjab province, Pakistan. Its episcopal seat is the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Lahore. History In 1594 the Mughal emperor Akbar invited some Catholic priests from Goa to take up permanent residence at his court. This group of missionaries, all Jesuits, once they arrived in the Punjab, were able to build a church, where they celebrated Christian rites, and began to receive adults into the Church. The ''Catholic Naqib'' () is the oldest Urdu-language Catholic magazine, founded in Lahore, Pakistan in 1929 by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Lahore, Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Lahore. It was originally published by Lahore Press Club, Lahore Press and, since 1997, by Naqib Printing Press. Naqib is an Arabic name that means "herald" or "proclaimer". Evarist Pinto
Evarist Pinto (born 31 December 1933 in Goa, Portuguese India) is the former archbishop of Karachi, Pakistan. Education He was educated at St. Thomas High School, Goa, India. In 1960 he started studying for priesthood at the St. Pius X Minor Seminary in Quetta. He continued his religious training at the Christ the King Seminary in Karachi, where he was ordained a priest on 6 January 1968. He is fluent in 10 languages including English, Urdu, Punjabi, Hebrew, Greek, Latin, Italian, German, French and Konkani. Career Father Pinto taught Sacred Scripture at Christ the King Seminary and from 1987 to 1993 was pastor of St. Lawrence’s Church, Karachi. He obtained a doctorate in biblical theology at the Urbanian University, Rome, and a master's degree in sacred scripture at the "Biblicum". Saint Patrick's Cathedral, Karachi
St. Patrick's Cathedral is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Karachi, and is located near the Empress Market in the Saddar locality in central Karachi. The church was completed in 1881, and can accommodate 1,500 worshipers. At the front of the cathedral, there is the Monument to Christ the King, built between 1926 and 1931 to commemorate the Jesuit mission in Sindh.
