The Oriental Orthodox Churches are Eastern Christian churches adhering to Miaphysite Christology, with approximately 60 million members worldwide. Baselios Mar Thoma Mathews II
Baselios Marthoma Mathews II (30 January 1915 – 26 January 2006) was the primate of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. He was the 6th Catholicos of Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church and 19th Malankara Metropolitan. Early life He was born at Perinad in Kollam district of Kerala, and had his theological education at Old Seminary Kottayam and also at Basil Dayara, Pathanamthitta. Later he joined Bishop’s College, Calcutta for his B. D. Degree, and studied Theology at the General Theological Seminary, New York. Priesthood He was ordained as deacon in 1938 then as priest in 1941. Baselios Geevarghese II took special interest in the activities of Father Mathews. As a monk, Fr. Catholicos Baselios Marthoma Paulose II (born K. I. Paul at west mangad ); 30 August 1946 – 12 July 2021) was the primate of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. He was enthroned as the 8th Catholicos of the Malankara Church and the 21st Malankara Metropolitan on 1 November 2010, succeeding Didymos I. Zacharias Aprem (born 11 March 1966) is the Metropolitan of the Adoor-Kadampanad Diocese and served as the assistant metropolitan of the Southwest American Diocese from 20 September 2017 to 3 November 2022. Thiruvananthapuram Orthodox Diocese is one of the 30 dioceses of Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. History On 20 February 1978, the Malankara Syrian Christian managing committee recommended a division in Kollam diocese. According to Committee’s recommendation, Thiruvananthapuram Diocese was formed on 1 January 1979, after the division of Kollam Diocese. At the time of formation 94 parishes were under the diocese. From 1986 onwards, the orthodox Center at Ulloor has served as the bishop house. The Kollam Orthodox Diocese, one of the 30 dioceses of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, was created after the Mulanthuruthy Synod in 1876. Zachariah Mar Anthonios is the metropolitan bishop of the diocese, whose head office is in Bishop House, Cross Junction, Kadappakada, Kollam, Kerala, India. History Kollam is an ancient commercial center and seaport. According to tradition, Thomas the Apostle arrived in the city and founded a church which is now underwater. Baselios Marthoma Mathews III (born 12 February 1949) is the present Catholicos of the East and Malankara Metropolitan of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, serving as its primate. He was enthroned as the 22nd Malankara Metropolitan on 14 October 2021 and as the 9th Catholicos on 15 October 2021 at St. Peter and St. Paul's Church, Parumala, succeeding Baselios Marthoma Paulose II. Early life and education Mathews was born on 12 February 1949 to Cherian Anthrayos of Mattathil family in Vazhoor.
