Action (comics)
''Action'' was a British comics, British weekly British boys' magazines, boys' comic published by IPC Media, IPC Magazines from 14 February 1976 to 5 November 1977, when it merged with war comic ''Battle Picture Weekly, Battle'' after 86 issues. The comic was created by Pat Mills and Geoff Kemp. While initially a sales success, the comic quickly received media criticism for its violent content, causing a moral panic that ultimately saw it withdrawn from sale by IPC in October 1976, amid rumours it was to be banned. ''Action'' returned two months later in a much-sanitised form, quickly losing readers and being cancelled the following year. Despite its short lifespan, ''Action'' was highly influential on the British comics scene, and was a direct forerunner of the long-running ''2000 AD (comics), 2000 AD''. Action fiction is a genre in literature that focuses on stories involving high-stakes, high-energy, and fast-paced events. ''2000 AD'' is a weekly British science fiction-oriented British comics, comic magazine. As a comics anthology it serialises stories in each issue (known as "progs") and was first published by IPC Media, IPC Magazines in 1977, the first issue dated 26 February. Since 2000 it has been published by Rebellion Developments. Dredger (comics)
"Dredger" is a British comic action story published in the weekly anthologies ''Action'' and '' Battle Action'' from 14 February 1976 to 7 October 1978 by IPC Magazines. The strip focused on the eponymous, uncompromising secret agent and his partner Breed, featuring self-contained stories that featured Dredger getting out of lethal situations with an innovative and violent approach. Creation Left with a short time to create an all-new comic for IPC Magazines and a shortage of suitable writers, Pat Mills and Geoff Kemp soon hit on a formula of repurposing elements of popular films. The character of Harry Callahan from the Dirty Harry film series - which had recently released a third successful instalment, '' The Enforcer'' was the inspiration for Dredger, who was then transplanted into the spy genre. The Axis powers, originally called the Rome–Berlin Axis and also Rome–Berlin–Tokyo Axis, was the military coalition which initiated World War II and fought against the Allies of World War II, Allies. "Hellman of Hammer Force" is a British comic strip published by IPC Magazines in the boys' comic anthology titles ''Action'' and later ''Battle'' between 14 February 1976 and 8 July 1978. The story was set in World War II; while war comics were common material in British comics of the time, "Hellman of Hammer Force" was rare for its use of a sympathetic Wehrmacht officer as the lead protagonist. While not as controversial as fellow ''Action'' stories such as "Kids Rule O.K." and "Hookjaw" it was nevertheless caught up in the campaign against the title by the British tabloid press.
