Acapella (trimaran)
''Acapella'' is an historic trimaran sailboat, designed and built by Walter Greene in 1978 and later renamed ''Olympus Photo''. Walter and his wife Joan raced in the 1978 Round Britain race, coming in 1st in class and 4th overall. Later that year, Canadian Mike Birch sailed Acapella (renamed Olympus Photo) to a first-place win in the first Route du Rhum trans-Atlantic race, establishing Walter's reputation as a multihull designer. Mike Birch
Mike Birch (1 November 1931 – 26 October 2022) was a Canadian navigator. Biography Birch began sailing later in his life, but gained notoriety in the 1976 OSTAR where he came in second on a 30' trimaran "The Third Turtle" beating the 236' "CLUB MEDITERRANEE". He continued his surprising success as a solo sailor in the inaugural Route du Rhum in 1978. His sailboat, the '' Olympus Photo'', a 12-meter trimaran, caught up with the larger ' of late in the race. Birch's victory at the Route du Rhum would begin the reign of the multihull, particularly following the death of Alain Colas. Birch continued a long career racing offshore, completing his final race at the Transat Jacques Vabre in 2007, where he finished in 16th place. Route Du Rhum
The Route du Rhum is a wikt:transatlantic, transatlantic Single-handed sailing, single-handed yacht racing, yacht race, which takes place every four years in November. The course is between Saint Malo, Brittany, Metropolitan France and Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe, overseas France, in the Caribbean. The first competition, won by Canadian Mike Birch, Michael Birch in his boat ''Olympus Photo'' by a margin of 98 seconds over second-placed Michel Malinovsky in ''Kriter V'', was held in 1978, and was marked in tragedy by the disappearance of Alain Colas during the crossing. A trimaran (or double-outrigger) is a multihull boat that comprises a main hull and two smaller outrigger hulls (or "floats") which are attached to the main hull with lateral beams. OSTAR
The Single-handed Trans-Atlantic Race (STAR) is an east-to-west yacht race across the North Atlantic. When inaugurated in 1960, it was the first single-handed ocean yacht race; it is run from Plymouth in England to Newport, Rhode Island in the United States, and has generally been held on a four yearly basis. The race is organised by the Royal Western Yacht Club and was originally sponsored by the UK-based newspaper ''The Observer'', and known as the Observer Single-handed Trans-Atlantic Race; due to changes in sponsorship, it has been known as the CSTAR, Europe 1 STAR, and the Europe 1 New Man STAR. After the 2000 edition, the RWYC took the decision to split the race into two events, one using smaller boats and intended for amateurs and young sailors, the other for professionals.
